Smelly towels?

I was told by washing manufacturer to run my machine at least once evry three months on 90 degreesm run it with no clothes or detergent. I groaned at this because it took over 2 hours, but I have found it does the trick. The other thing I do, instead of clagon to soften the water I use dishwasher salt every third load, I through a cup full in the drum and then wash the towels in this (with detergent) of course). I can buy this in 25kg bags for £6.99 form the local plumbing suppliers.
When I was the cats' bedding I use vinegar with the detergent.
Oh I don't wash on 30 degrees at all, back home cold water washes were all the rage back in the 80's, everything started to smell and look dingy, despite what the washing powder manufacturers claimed. Found the same to be true these days.
My Mum used to boil all the whites, the sheets, towels and tea towels in a copper. She used to say, this will kill every germ.
She also advocated a boiling wash of all our bed linen and a very hot wash for the pillows and blankets if one of us mentioned nits at school. We had long hair and never had nits. Our school uniforms were also thoroughly cleaned to make sure no sneaky little critter would enjoy us (over kill, but this was my Mum).
Oh towels only ever get used once in our house. Just the thought of the dead skin we have rubbed off as we dry ourselves.
I guess we all have our own preferences.
Since doing as advised by the wm manufacturer my machine does not smell.
Oh what about the washing machine cleaner you can buy? This stuff is supposed to clean out all the gunk that has accummulated in the pipes and hoses..Just a thought.0 -

I've found the filters (but can't get the cover offso they will have to wait for another day!
I'm going to go and put it on a 90 deg wash right now (no detergent) and will see how that goes! (I might add some vinegar to the softener drawer ....)

Oh my!
Started it off (90 deg, no detergent) and you wouldn't believe how much soap must be in it! Honestly, you'd think I had detergent in there!
Hopefully this will help!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
