selling second hand books

Can anyone recommend how I can sell second hand books. I have tried ebay but they never seem to sell on there. I have also looked at amazon trade in but at 20p a book it seems you would need loads just to cover your cost of posting them.

Anyone any other suggestions? I am not looking to make a fortune and ideally want to get rid of them quick

Thanks

If amazon and eBay haven't worked then you might as well charity shop them. Unfortunately the market for books died a few years back.

If you have enough stuff (or you and a friend) as well as the books you could try car boot sale. But you won't get much per book and you probably won't sell many. Or if you have any second hand bookshops nearby (a dying breed!) they may give you a pound or so for a bundle of books.

I'm doing a massive book cull at present and am resigned to the fact they will probably all be charity shopped.

I am too have a clear out of books, there are websites if you Google very similar to musicmagpie. However they will only take unpopular books- out of say 35 books I went through only 5 of them had any value, totaling £16- but these were academic ones.

I will be charity shopping the majority!!

I sold a few books, CDs and DVDs on MusicMagpie:

I think I made about £30 a time :money: They don't take everything, though, - you'll have to enter each book/barcode and see if they want it.

Musicmagpie doesn't say anything about buying books

    - they're not on the list of what you can sell

Most books are worthless, or are worth so little standard sellers make a loss once postage & fees are taken into account.

IIRC selling a book on Amazon for 1p will net you £1.41 before you have to pay out for postage, so anything thicker than a large letter isn't worth it.

Check the likes of Amazon to see if they will take your book in as a trade-im (normally very miss and hit), or to see if it's worth something. But for the majority of books, take to a charity shop.

However if that charity shop has a promo on books (5 for £1) then consider somewhere else as they would probably have tons out back (and unlike clothes can't sell abroad).

Most of my books end up in the local free 'exchange' shop.

If you are near Oxford, it may be worth trying Blackwells? Although I'd probably take digital photos of the spines initially rather than lug boxes up the stairs.

Amazon Trade In seems to be minimum 25p per book, though not all books are listed. If you've got textbook type books they may be worth a lot more. The great thing though is that postage is free, you just print off a label stick on a box full of books and send off. So you get to keep all the 25p's at least, and if you've got a lot lying around it could add up.

Not done yet, but going to have a go this week. Seems to get good feedback from users.

  • If any on them are textbooks/academic books it's definitely worth putting them on Amazon. These types of books can fetch several pounds each, but you won't get much for novels (especially popular ones) as others have mentioned.
