Help with P45 + new job

in Cutting tax
Hi all,
This is going to be a little hard to explain as I have now realised I've made a big mistake.
I recently became employed after being on JSA for two months. My new employers gave me a pay roll form to fill in along with a P46 form.
My employers rushed me to do this as they said I would be able to make it in time for whenever they'll pay me.
I have now come to the realisation that I should not have filled in the P46. Today, I received a P45 from the the Job Centre (as they are apparently my former employers) and it states to hand it into my employers. However, I already submitted a P46 - stupid I know.
What will happen if I don't hand in my P45? Will I get taxed more? If so, by how much more? I'm on 19k a year, with 0 debts, no children or any tax credits that can possibly be claimed.
Any help would be appreciated as I'm confused.

You filled in a P46 in the absence of a P45. You didn't have the P45 to hand over at the time, so completing a P46 was correct, you weren't stupid to do so - though technically P46 forms are no longer used.
Assuming you are not working again until after the bank holiday, simply hand over the P45 next week (keeping your part of it). That will enable your employer to correctly deduct tax in future payments. HMRC may also confirm your code to them.
If you don't hand over your P45, HMRC will still ensure that you pay the correct tax though it may take longer to sort out than if you do pass on the P45.
What options did you tick on the P46?0 -

Thank you for the response.
I feel a little more relieved now.
I ticked option B. Which is:
"This is now my only job, but since last 6 April I have had another job, or have received taxable Jobseeker's Allowance or Incapacity Benefit I do not receive a state or occupational pension."
To be honest, I didn't know what box to tick, but this seemed to be the box that related to my situation the most.I hope it's the correct option.

It sounds like you've ticked the correct box, no harm done. It's unlikely you will be taxed incorrectly, and if you are, it will only take a couple of months to rectify when they receive your P45.
It's likely the P46 has actually prevented emergency tax in the interim between getting the job and getting your P45, so you've probably done the right thing, just make sure the correct tax code is on your payslips0 -
Thanks for the help! I'll be handing the P45 over to HR on Tuesday. It's time to enjoy the extended weekend!
Cheers.

That may not be tghe end of the story. What is the tax code on the P45?
Does it have your total JSA as the gross pay or does it include any previous earnings? The only thing that is constant is change.0
