Statute barred

I have an ex still chasing me for money which he says I owe him from 2006! I have never acknowledged this debt, it's all in his head. He wanted some money from me which included debts run up in his name, he also tried to put a unilateral notice on my house saying he wanted some money from the equity. A land reg tribunal refused him the the notice. I have recently received a letter from a solicitor saying if I do not pay him £20,000 'as promised' then he will issue court proceedings against me. The last time I heard anything from his solicitor before this was in 2008 when he lost the tribunal, but still thought I should give him some money! Can this issue now be classed as statute barred?

He attempted to have a charge put on your property and failed. You have never acknowledged what he considers to be your "debt" to him. Therefore statute-barring doesn't come into it.

You don't owe him a penny. You can either write back to his solicitor (who will write all the letters they are asked to write as long as the ex pays for them) or ignore the letter altogether.

I'd be minded to string the solicitor along, while acknowledging nothing, just to bump the ex's bill up a much as possible.

I am tempted to ignore it, I'm a bit worried writing to solicitor myself in case I put something I shouldn't! I was concerned in case he did issue court proceedings and I ignored the letter and so it would go against me in court.

"Proof of claim"
Dear Solicitor .
RE: recent demands for money.
I am unable to proceed any further with this claim as the demand is devolved of any proof of claim.
I await your further attention, if I receive no proof of claim from your office within 14 days I shall close the matter.

Agreed string him on, he will soon get fed up of this..

Dear Solicitor,

Your client's spurious and baseless demands for monies not owed now or ever in the past are becoming vexatious.

Unless your client can provide incontrovertible documentary evidence that their claim has some basis in reality, other than in their fevered imagination, I will consider this issue at an end.

Don't use cod legalese. It just makes you look pompous and foolish especially if you get the terminology a bit wrong as in this suggested draft.

Much better to write back in simple honest language to say that you have no idea what the claim is for and you don't owe anything. That achieves the same thing as far as the solicitor is concerned and also won't irritate a judge should any of this ever get before a court.

Wait until the solicitor's deadline passes, then ask why you have heard nothing from him.

Expect the reply 'I am no longer instructed in this matter'
