Old debt that just lingers....

I have £3k on BarclayCard. This debt has been in my life for ages. It's because I've never tackled it properly - ie got rid of it, then more than occasionally added to it that has meant it's just stuck around for years and YEARS.

I can't work because I have to care for my son who has severe medical needs & is severely disabled. I do get the benefits I'm entitled to - well what I'm deemed to be entitled to! My husband is a teacher so earns just a smidge too much for us to be entitled to any more than we get.

We've stripped back everything and live modestly (but happily), I just need to knock off bits off this credit card regularly and not add to it - have I mentioned that I've just cut it up? That's quite major I guess.

I'm not sure why I'm posting this really, I suppose it's in the vain hope that posting this will mean something will dramatically happen or that it will just encourage me not to go back to bad habits!

Anyway, enough of my rambling. I need to get back to sorting out stuff to Ebay.

When I last sold something on Ebay (which was last week). I've got a direct debit/transfer thing set up to go over monthly too....
  • Thought I might look at what working at home opportunities there are around, although I know there are a lot of dodgy ones advertised about. Plus any legit ones probably get snapped up super quick.

Well done Skint Monkey for tackling this problem. Have you called Barclaycard and negotiated a life of balance deal? They are quite approachable and willing to talk in my experience.

    Good Luck.

No I haven't and didn't realise I could try that. What would that mean then in reality? (sorry if I'm being really daft, my brain is a bit frazzled with all this money biz today) xxx
  • I should probably add, just in case it helps anyone with their wise words for me, that we are having another baby - due in January. So an added reason why I need to kick this credit card into touch once and for all.

Google 'local selling site' or 'items for sale in xxx' these local selling sites are brilliant, buyers on your doorstep and no selling fees, we have a dozen or more round here and people sell anything they don't need for as much as they can get on ebay.

Other than that, post up an SOA and we may be able to help you budget.

Thanks. I use Gumtree and Ebay which seems to work quite well so far.

I do make crafty things so might think about how I can do more with that too (although I think the craft market is pretty saturated already!).

Cheers for the offer of looking at my SOA - to be honest we've stripped things back as much as possible plus moved our suppliers over recently to get better deals. To be frank we (mainly me), needs to not buy crap and sell any crap I do have to sort things out! And anything I do make from selling etc needs to go straight to Mr BarclayCard...

Its amazing though what a fresh pair of eyes can do looking at an SOA to be honest.

  • So I've been putting loads of random crap, sorry 'treasure', on ebay, and was surprised to say my used, yes used, epilator sold for £43! I've transferred the money into my bank account but not going to transfer it to my credit card as want to make sure that I have enough money in my bank account to cover when my outgoings go out at start of September - which includes my direct debit to Barclaycard.

I've got other stuff on ebay to sell so hopefully that should earn me a few extra quid.

I've decided to go by the ethos of trying to live off cash on a day to day basis. If I don't have the cash in my purse then I can't have that item, that way I avoid getting out the old plastic. Just so easy to do and to lose control of what I've spent.
