First time mortgage application declines

Hi there,
This is my first post so please be gentle! Me and my partner are buying a house in Scotland, we have found the PERFECT house privately and thought everthing was going well. We spoke to London & Country and a mortgage was agreed in principal with Natwest, our head was full of ikea shopping trips and garden designs as the broker was confident all was perfect, however when we submitted all our documentation Natwest have rejected our application based on some missed loan payments on my partners credit check, these occured in 2009. The broker had seen copies of our experian reports so this was a complete shock to us as we felt this had been investigated.
We are devestated as we feel our dream house is slipping away, the broker at L&C is looking into other options right now. Does anyone know if we should be giving up all hope now or if it is possible a lender will look at us, apart from this his credit history is great and mine apparently passed their checks.
Any help would be appreciated, we are now in full panic mode!!!:(

they should be able to find them with another, like woolich etcDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0
