Re-waterproofing jackets

I came across an old Dannimac of mine last week, which is in excellent condition apart from grubby. I washed it and now wondered if there is a way to make it more water repellent/proof. I seem to remember that ironing might work, but is that a myth?

I bought a sachet of waterproofing stuff from GoOutdoors for around £2 and did 2 jackets in the washing machine with it. Not free but cheaper than buying a new jacket.

Did it work well? Now this is me being paranoid, but did it effect your next load of washing at all?
  • We use Nik Wax on ours and have never had any post-wash problems at all. Run a hot wash through with vinegar to clean out your machine if you are worried

Lidl aften do a waterproof spray, very reasonably or Nikwax is good - but much pricier. Check out camping/caraven shops - they sell waterproofing spray too.

Don't use fabric softener after washing - it's supposed to affect the water-repellence.
  • If you've washed it in a detergent that will mask any waterproofing treatment previously applied, so give it another wash in a soap based cleaner like Nikwax Tech Wash. Then if it's not waterproof you need to use a waterproof treatment - is it a cotton jacket? If so, Nikwax are currently giving away sachets of Cotton Proof in their WebQuiz, so play that (nikwax.co.uk then click the 'free samples' link), get the questions right and you could re-proof for free.
I've never heard of the ironing trick though?!

The Tech Wash is overated and overpriced !

Just use traditional Soap Flakes from Wilkinsons or Home Bargains , a 10th of the price and does the same job !

I use the Nic Wax re-waterproofing stuff, then run a hot, empty wash. Agree, once waterproofed, you can then wash in soap flakes (or liquid soap which I have to hand)
