You can use shortcrust for most stuff, I use it for sweet and savoury.

I always use shortcrust pastry whenever a dish/recipe needs pastry as its the only sort I can make lol

I add a bit of sugar to the breadcrumb stage if its going to be used for a sweet dish, and leave this out if its for a savoury dish

It's nice to sprinkle in a little icing sugar if you are making a sweet dish. It sort of mixes in without having that gritty look.

i found a pkt of ready made shortcrust pastry in the freezer yesterday so used it today
1-as the topping on steak pie-we normally use puff pastry and it was good-kids preferred it

2-the leftover bits i cut out into small rounds and as i had rolled it very thin it made a sort of biscuit which we had with strawberries and ice cream for dessert

i dont know why i bought it in the first place but it was lovely today

  • I add about an ounce of self raising flour as well as some sugar to the sweet version - it make a great 'top' for a pie!

Apple pie, cherry pie, jam tarts, lemon curd tarts, mince pies - all sorts of scrummy things :D:D:D
You don't *have* to add any sugar or sweetening to the shortcrust pastry when using it for "sweet" things, the fruits will add the sweetness without the need to add extra ;)

  • I learned to make pastry this week, too. I fear it may not be good for the waistlines of the Wossinge household, but think it'll come in useful for using up leftovers - what could be more old-style?! :)

You can add grated cheese to it too. My mum used to make a sweet pie out of oats and cheese that was delicious.

I have only used shortcrust pastry for one sweet thing and that is jam tarts. I don't add sugar to the pastry.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
