Phoneworld - faulty phone case won't refund

Hello,
I've been having fun today trying to get a refund in a shop. It's a shop that sells just phone covers in a disused shop. The type where I guess they get the rent really cheap as the landlord is desperate for any money. Anyway its basically like a market stall in a shop unit.
My girlfriend purchased a phone cover on Sunday. It's the type where the phone clips inside and then has a leather effect case. The man in the shop showed us the case and took the phone in and out a few times. We purchased the case, but a few hours later noticed the case was split. He must have split it putting the phone in.
Today I attempted to take the case back to get a refund, they refused outright and said that this was not possible and that I had no right to a refund.
They wouldn't budge so I stayed in the shop pointing out my predicament to several customer and lost the shop a few sales. At this point they asked me to stop doing this or they would call the police and that I could not do this inside the shop.
I moved outside the door and carried on talking to people as they walked into the shop warning them about the faulty product I had and that they would not refund me. It was then the end of my lunch hour and I had to return to work, before I went I told them I would be back and would contact trading standards. He asked if I was threatening him and that they would call the police if i kept talking to the customers.
I have contacted trading standards who have logged the complaint but are not going to do anything to help me. I guess now I can do nothing to get my money back ???
