  • If only you had an Aldi close by they are so much cheaper than Sainsbury................Do you have a local greengrocer, butcher or market where you can just buy one of any item with the added bonus of cheap deals at the end of the day?

The Foodbanks are there for just this sort of emergency - you just need to go to your doctor or the CAB and explain your position and they will give you a voucher to take along to your nearest Foodbank. You will be given 3 days food, and you do get some choice e.g. baked beans or spaghetti etc.

Aldi may be cheaper on most items by just a penny or two per item. It won't make much difference on £3. Does Aldi sell 1 carrot if a customer just wanted 1 carrot?
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Thanks all, I'm not on JSA as I didn't work for a period in 2011 and it was refused, but I need to get in touch as circumstances have now changed. I didn't realise they'd cover transport, so that's something

No Aldi near by, and it would cost £5-6 to get to one so there's no point me ever going there really. Bizzylizzy I'll have to get in touch with CAB, thinking I'll need a buffer this week

Could you try a food bank? I've no idea how you qualify for getting food from one but it could be worth a go.

No, neither do other supermarkets as I stated previously you would need to go to a greengrocer or the market to buy just one item.
As for saving a penny or two per item try 20p on a packet of basic spaghetti and there was absolutely no need to be so petty and hostile.

I would think that if you only had £3 to spend every penny saved would make a difference.
  • Hi all!

I was shortlisted for a job which is brill but it's cost me £11.80 to get there and they hopefully want to see me again before the week is out. I have a pair of shoes finishing on eBay that can pay for the (hopefully) next interview and cover the shoes postage. Seeing as I had £15 to spend on food, cleaning products and sending additional Special Delivery documents, this leaves me with the grand total of £3.02. I've raided all my bags for spare change but that's all I have.

I know you OSers love a challenge, so how am I meant to eke this out to last me until Sunday?

In the fridge I have one bowl of tomato sauce which I'll have for supper tomorrow.

    I've also got:

Half a can of kidney beans
    One slice of bread
Half a tin of peaches, although they've been open for five days :(
    One carrot
    Three peppers
    Four eggs
    Butter
    Ketchup, Mayo
    Milk
    Small tin sweetcorn
    Tinned potatoes
    Baked beans
    Half a bag of pasta
    Onion
    7 cloves garlic
    Stock cubes
    1" ginger
    Rice Krispies

Any ideas what I can buy for £3.02 to make enough meals until Sunday? There's no oven, so nothing that needs baking or roasting, and I'm really craving fruit, but I'm stuck with Sainsburys

    Thanks lads and lasses

I would buy a cheap loaf of bread because that can be used for toast 50p
    jar of marmalade 27p
    mozzarella 44p
    tin of tomatoes 34p
    jar of curry sauce 26p
    1kg rice 40p
    1kg basics mixed veg 75p
    £2.96

I don't know what you have left seeing as it Tuesday here are a few ideas that you could make with what you have.

Pasta with butter and garlic is cheap and tasty

You could also make an onion and pepper frittata using 2 eggs, some milk, sliced onion and peppers cook it in the oven like a quiche and slice it up, that would do lunch and dinner for two days......... you could serve it with sliced and fried tinned potatoes

You could also make a mixed bean pot, rinse the sauce off of ½ a tin of baked beans, mix with the kidney beans and put in an ovenproof dish buy a ball of mozzarella, slice it in half and lay it on top of the beans and cook until the mozzarella has melted

The other half of the mozzarella can be used in another meal such as pasta with tomatoes and mozzarella

    vegetable curry on 2 nights

Add vegetables to rice and pour over half a tin of tomatoes and a couple of cloves of garlic bake in the oven

I also agree with the others about going to CAB and getting a voucher for a food bank just to see you through.

 Supermarkets do sell individual veg. I've never been in one that didn't. I buy most of my veg by weight (normally from tesc0 but have also done the same in sainsb and asd@).
