Best Mosquito/Insect Repellant?

Last year in Barbados both me and OH got horrendously bitten by mosquitos. We've just returned from a week of walking in Austria and whilst I somehow escaped with no bites, OH's legs are covered in them.
We're off to Italy at the end of the week and I'm hoping to find something that will be effective - we borrowed someone's Jungle Formula last year but it didn't seem to help.
Any recommendations?
I'd also like to check compatibility with suncreams, particularly P20 and Calypso once a day. As they're only applied once a day and left to soak in, would it be OK to apply the mosquito repellant after that 15 minute period without it interfering with the efficacy of the sunscreen?
Thank you!

We use Boots Soltan which has an insect repellent incorporated in it. It does need to be reapplied during the day though.
The slightly controversial Avon Skin So Soft also works for us.0 -
following recommendations from fellow travellers, I've bought Boots Tropical strength repellant for our upcoming trip to Turkey (and I'll have some Avon skin so soft in my case too).

I tend not to get bitten during the day - its at dusk/nighttime the little blighters like me, so I put on my repellant for that time of the evening.0 -
I've contacted some local Avon reps to see if they've got any of the SSS in stock and have looked at the Boots Tropical range - which one of the varieties have you gone for balletshoes?0

I have one roll-on and one pump spray to take with me, to see how i get on with them (I bought them on the current bogohp deal, and if you have a Boots advantage card, you might find a £2.50 off a £10 spend on healthcare voucher in the acm machine, which this range counts as ).0 -

When we were in New Zeland north island they claimed tha "Deet" was the best.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Daughter has recently discovered "Smidge". Swears by it. I've only tried it locally, so only with midges, but it worked.. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

Take vitamin b1 for two weeks before and during. That will stop it.Life is short, smile while you still have teeth0

Autan is a good brand, it's what they sell in Italy anyway. Not always easy to get here unfortunately though.
If you do get bitten, they sell cream in italy called fenestil that takes down the itching a lot. Not sure if it's available in the UK though0 -
I find this much more successful than Deet and it's natural
