I make spag bol sauce from scratch and wouldn't touch any ready-made stuff now, but I do use YS/on offer packet sauces such as shepherd's pie mix (and have no qualms about chucking them in a slow cooker stew either!)
Home made bread is really a matter of personal preference, I think. I honestly don't know if it's cheaper or not - in terms of having the stuff in to make a loaf rather than go to the shops for one, it saves me money because if I went to the shops I would almost certainly buy other stuff too.
It's also a real treat to have fresh warm bread - but if I want to make sandwiches, I need shop bought.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.
