in Cutting tax
Hi
i am wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a "dummies" guide to wether or not your entitled, are most people entitled to some money basck?
since 2000 my partner has been in and out of jobs, basically because the factories/agencies cant provide enough work, this job is the longest one he has had it has been almost 12 months since he started, but a new company took over at the beginning of the tax year.
when he hasnt been working we have claimed JSA, but he thinks he was probably emergency taxed in a few jobs, but we have been silly and never kept anything with tax codes or anything on, also some of the companies are no longer around and the buildings have been taken over by other comapnies.
we are hoping he/we are entitled to some tax back as a cheque on the doormat would really help, as i guess it would for everyone, lol
cheers in advance

The best way is to send a letter to the tax office that deals with your husband's current employer (ask them for the address), listing when and where your husband has worked (if agencies, list the agencies and not who the companies they sent him to work for) and what benefits he has claimed since April 2001.
Enclose any P45s/P60s that he still has and ask them to check whether a repayment is due. State in the letter that you've provided all the P45s/P60s you have and that will prevent them from sending you a request for any you haven't sent. Hopefully they'll have enough information, or be able to find it, to issue a repayment if it's due. There is a chance that they won't be able to do anything, particularly if some of the employers ceased trading without fulfilling their obligations of reporting pay/tax details to HMRC.
