Thanks everyone. I'm female Sue. The blank rota sounds like a good idea and would suit me really well. What sort of volunteering is that? A few of those ideas sounds interesting. The food bank one sounds good. I haven't been in touch with the volunteer bureau yet but that sounds like a good idea!
We run a drop-in in the afternoons when we offer a meal, so need cooks each morning as well as people for the sessions. And we also do an evening / night van outreach. So there's four afternoons and 5 evenings when we need volunteers (plus we use a fair few in the office as well).

One of my colleagues also volunteers in a community cafe, and we have one of those close to where I live too. They also operate on the 'blank rota' systems as far as I can see: some people always offer the same times, but you've got to have some flexibility built in for those times when you're not well, go on holiday, or have appointments!

I used to volunteer with the local youth offending team, and I'm also in South Wales. They train you in various roles from supervising reparation work (similar to community service) and mentoring, to being an appropriate adult in a custody situation and even serving on a disciplinary board. It's very rewarding, and although can seem daunting, these are usually kids who have done something stupid and have to make reparation in some way.

We sometimes deal with the Youth Offenders, to be honest you can see why they are there - generally brain dead morons "safe bruv safe bruv" kind of idiots. They usually seem to completely ignore their supervisors, and think they are gods gift. I wouldn't do that job if you paid me, let alone volunteer for it!
