Just a bit of a rant .. please feel free to ignore!
My OH works for a division of a large company, their office manager resigned with immediate effect middle of July. His Line Manager *S* was telling him about it and said they were going to advertise the position both internally and externally. OH said well *J* is an experienced office manager and you know her really well (we all socialise on a regular basis and are good friends) He asked if I would send in my CV – which I did. I was given an interview on Friday July 19th with *S* and the Department Manager*A* which went really well. I was called back for a 2nd interview on Thursday 25th July with the Head Honcho at Head Office which again went really well ………
On the Thursday afternoon, my OH called and said that *A*& *S* had had a word and although it was still unofficial until I was notified by HR which would be Mon or Tues the following week – I had got thejob and they had said he could tell me so I wasn’t worrying over the weekend. I didn’t hear anything until the Tuesday afternoon when HR called and told me they were still “processing my application”. On Tuesday evening *S* called me and very apologetically said that the delay was actually because they were making someone redundant and they were not going to be told until Monday this week and part of the protocol was to give them the opportunity to apply for any internal positions. I wasn’t happy but understood it was out of their hands. I got a call on Monday from HR telling me that I would know by Today (Wednesday)and that they hoped to “process my application” shortly. I understand that they can’t tell me about the redundancy, but would have been nice to be at least warned that there was another candidate! (They don't know that I had already been told by *S* & *A*)
Yesterday we found out that the internal candidate who was being made redundant is *A*’s new girlfriend - they have been together about 2 months and she is also a very good friend of mine. This has left things very awkward and I am peed off that I have been kept hanging for almost a month since my 1st interview. When she found out I had applied, she did say to me that she would have applied herself but she couldn’t work with *A* and wished me good luck, so now I don’t know if she has applied, I can’t ask her as we are not supposed to know who it is that is getting made redundant. *A*obviously can’t tell my OH it’s his girlfriend that is my “rival” as its all confidential, and *A* doesn’t know that we are already aware that it’s his girlfriend.
I would love this job as the money is excellent and I love the department and people I would be working with, so just waiting on THE callnow to see if I have got it!

If the girlfriend is being made redundant then the company have a duty to find her another job if suitable. If suitable then naturally she is higher than you in the pecking order regardless of who she is sleeping with.

I appreciate she has to be given the opportunity to apply and to be honest if I was going to "lose" the job to anyone it would be her - she's lovely!
I'm more miffed with the way its been handled tbh ... HR keep fobbing me off with different dates they will let me know. The only reason I know what is happening is because my OH works with *S* & *A* and they get on so well (My OH is also a manager there) I'm also slightly confused as from what I can gather HR had informed *S*& *A* on the Thursday that I was to be offered the job, so by my reckoning - there was no longer a vacancy to offer, the job had gone. *S* & *A* were only informed about the redundancy on the Tuesday morning when they asked HR if I had been made an official offer. *S* has told me that I am still their prefered candidate so fingers crossed.0 -
Sorry to hear about your situation, it clearly could have been handled better. Perhaps the hiring manager forgot to check with HR if there were any redeployment candidates before interviewing you?
Anyway best to try to put this out of your mind now. As they liked you, it's definitely worth applying for any future vacancies that come up.
Good luck!0 -
Yeah it looks like the above, simply someone jumping the gun - their duty of care is to the employee at risk of redundancy.
Not the best situation but hopefully it will work out the way you want.0 -
