Your favourite OS food substitutions?

Just thought it would be interesting to see if anyone else had cheap and easily available food substitutions? i.e when I make a Chinese/Thai style noodle dish, I quite often use value spaghetti instead of noodles. If they are broken up a bit, and cooked a few minutes with the sauce afterwards - there is really not that huge a difference to justify the price of buying actual noodles.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

    I don't buy tins of condensed milk any more, making my own from milk powder, butter, hot water and sugar, it's so much cheaper.
    (Only found this out after googling when I couldn't buy any locally. :))

    Use cheap tin of baked beans in chilli con carne as hubby didn't like kidney beans. Thought it would be yeugh, but was actually very nice.

    Use greek yoghourt in place of cream in most recipes. It's lighter and usually cheaper, especially if you make your own.

    Thanks for that I'd always assumed SP noodles were cheap.

    I can't think of substitutes as such but I always use garlic paste or ginger paste in recipes that call for crushed/fresh. I don't buy the 'Lazy' version either but from Asian shops. The same goes for herbs as I almost always use dried rather than fresh. It saves waste as well as money up front.

    It is starch substitution. If the recipe says serve with rice there is nothing stopping you serving with pasta, noodles, chips, baked potato or even 'instant' mashed potato when you've forgotten to stock your store cupboard.
    Chilli con Carne and mash is good comfort food.
    For myself I am an optimist - there does not seem to be much use being anything else.

  • Gluten free pasta (I have to buy due to health) is expensive, but most pasta sauces work great with rice. And value rice is only 40p per kilo!
