Best "Free Roam" games..

Options
I need some new games. I like the free roaming games like GTA, Saints Row and Red Dead Redemption.

Can anyone suggest any others I have missed?

I would recommend Farcry 3, it's like an tropical island GTA/RedDead. I've had a good 40+ hours of fun with it so far, and am only halfway through the story, keep on getting sidetracked.

Apart from the main story, you have :

    Hunting wild animal missions
    Racing side missions
    Checkpointed medical delivery side missions
Assassination side missions (take out a specific target)
reclaim enemy base camps (a la Just cause).

I believe there's a multiplayer part too, but haven't touched that side of things.

Can pick it up pretty cheap now too. (£15-£20 depending on platform).

The above 2 mentioned games (Skyrim & Far Cry 3) and adding Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas to the list.
Hours of exploring, looting etc :D

There is also Far Cry 2 set in Africa (but you have to be willing to deal with re-spawning enemies at the checkpoints - which was never patched out. Also the Malaria gets annoying).

I played through FC2 and the respawning enemies aren't as bad as you think, as you're normally traveling at speed in a vehicle I'd just drive through them. 9 times out of 10 they'd attempt to pursue but crash/get lost. The malaria is often quoted as annoying but once you've done a few missions you have an ample supply of medicine. Its showing as £4 second hand in CEX, I'd say thats worth as the rest of the game is fairly strong if sometimes a little boring in story.

Any of the Elder Scrolls series, or the Gothic series. Also the Risen Series (based from Gothic)

Just Cause might be one to check out as well.

If you want to try some other open ended games, theres also the X-Series (spaceship based) or Mount and Blade

I echo the suggestion of the Fallout games, Far cry, Elder Scrolls eg Oblivion, skyrim. Id also suggest a look at Borderlands and Rage.

What about the Fable games as well.

I would agree that Far cry 2 and 3 are excellent, as is Elder Scrolls, and any of the Fable games are also brilliant.

Hours and hours of entertainment and you can probably pick them up for next to nothing now as they have been out for a while

    Just cause 2

Another vote for the Fallout series. Huge, immersive experiences with intelligent storylines and lots to discover.

Dead Island might be worth a try, although the world isn't as big and it certainly isn't intelligent. Great if you're in the mood for smashing zombies though.
