How does it appear on your credit report if you're offered a loan but choose not to take it, in case this does happen?
It'll leave a footprint. Which after a few months will be ignored by any further creditors looking at your credit record. Try not to apply for a loan that you will be declined for although that's much easier said than done.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Thanks to everyone who has responded. I think a single joint loan would be the best option as loans over 7.5k seem to have better rates. I've received both our credit reports through the post to check everything is as I thought it was and it is, no missed payments or anything negative and we pay more than the min payments on everything each month.

I think we'll apply to Tesco (advertised rate is 5.1%) - unless someone knows that I'm not the kind of customer they're looking for?

thanks again for all the replies - it's a bit of a minefield!

No one can tell you who will accept you or at what rate.

A good place to try would be the Nationwide as you can do a soft application with them that won't show up as a search on your credit histories.

Also look at ratesetter, zopa etc. There seems to be a lot of suicidally low rate lenders on those sites at the moment, and IIRC they start with a soft search which won't leave footprints.
