Is it still worth buying a wii?

I've never owned a console before (I am a PC gamer) but have been considering buying a wii.
I know there are more high tech consoles available now but I am lured by the comparatively cheap console and games prices plus large catalogue of games.
is it still worth buying one or is it just too old hat now?
Any advice appreciated.

It depends what your looking for in a console, if you like the type of games on offer it's worth looking on eBay for a value bundle. I haven't touched my Wii in years but at the time I enjoyed games on it plus that it could play GameCube games (I'm not sure if Wii U can also play GameCube games or not). It doesn't compare to PC, Xbox 360 or PS3 graphics wise, or game wise IMO but all have their pros and cons.I SUPPORT CAT RESCUE! Visit Cat Chat to support cat rescue too.

I am like you a PC gamer through and through. I also just bought a Wii for £40 about a week ago.
I've played on a few before but couldn't really justify the cost of purchasing one, especially at the £127 they are currently at on Amazon. I was really annoyed I missed the Amazon Black Friday £50 sell off a couple years ago as I would have snapped one up.
I'm also a bit of a snob when it comes to purchasing electrical goods - I like brand new.
However this was one of the best purchases I have made. I reckon I'll have spent about £100 all in for the console, a couple of extra controllers and additional games. Mine came with a motion plus controller, so bought another official motion plus addon (snobbish coming out!) and am haggling for another two controllers. Also bought a Wii Fit board (no game) on the cheap, and Wii Fit plus (snobbish wanting the latest version) will arrive on Tuesday - all from eBay.
Is it worth it? Yep.
The console came with Wii Sports, Wii Play, Just Dance, Brain Academy and Wii Sports Resort (which needs the motion plus addon). I've since purchased Raving Rabbids 2, Raving Rabbids TV, Zumba Fitness 2 (brand new for about half the current retail price) and Wii Play Motion. There are some great deals to be had, especially now the Wii U is out. However don't always assume eBay is the cheapest. I have seen many Wii Play Motions go for more used, than another retailer is selling brand new.
When the additional controllers arrive it'll be great when we have guests. However if you don't have many family members or mates to play with, it might not really be worth it.
1: If you do get one, make sure you RESET the console. Deleting the Mii 's isn't a proper reset.
2: Don't always assume eBay is the cheapest.
3: Get some keyboard wipes, or even the wipes you get with KFC and clean the controllers and console up nicely to make them look like new.
4: I have put the straps in the wash. They came out looking cleaner than when they arrived.
That's all I have on the subject.0 -
It depends what you want in a console. If you have seen the kinds of games on offer and like the look of them I'd go for it. I have a wii and have amassed a good amount of games (probably 30+). It great to be able to dip in and out of or to play when you have guests over. For the prices they are going for there isn't a reason not to!
My wii stopped working recently. We went to a boot fair and bought a second hand wii, without any wires or controllers for £4! Brought it home and works perfectly!0 -
It's certainly still worth buying a Wii. Even though the Wii U is now available it's really not worth the money. There are plenty of games for the Wii and there's a number of good ones you can pick up pretty cheap.
It's rare I've used the Wii when I've been alone, it's really more of a family/friends console. In my opinion, the games are much more fun when you're with someone else (and both waving your arms around like idiots lol).
I've used the Wii less than I have my 360 and PS3, but you can pick up the Wii really cheap now so I'd say it's worth buying it even if you're unsure. It is a decent console, but it does depend what you want in a console. You won't be playing games like Uncharted or Halo, but if you want to give Wii Sports a go or play a Mario game the Wii is great.
I'd suggest checking out some games for it and considering if anyone else will be interested in playing the games with you.0 -
its never been worth buying a wii. i have come across tons of people who bought one and said it quickly became a door stop.0

Donnajunkie is right i'm afraid. Once the novelty wears off, it's pointless. Something like the PS2 or the Original Xbox would be a better bet, I would have thought that they would both have a bigger library of games and cheaper to buy.0

There's also plenty of people who love their Wii consoles and plenty of Nintendo fans who game on the Wii daily.
Who's to say if the OP will get bored of it? They may find they're a fan of the Wii and play on the console for years to come.
For £40 or less it's worth buying it and seeing. It may be they don't have much interest in it and sell it again, but it could be that they do like it in which case it's £40 well spent.0 -
Forget the games, the Wii is worth the cost just for netflix lol.0

It depends what you want a console for. The Wii is brilliant for some easy going, not too demanding games.
I bought a Wii a couple of years ago and the best games are Mario Kart, Wii Sports and Super Smash Bros. They are all great as couch multiplayer, if you have a group of friends around and want to play a game but they aren't into gaming then the Wii is great.
I used to love just relaxing for a nice game of tennis or bowling, have a race or two on Mario Kart, but after 30 minutes or so you're bored and move on. I actually sold my Wii a few months ago because I just never used it.
If you want anything good single player then PS3 or Xbox is leagues ahead. There are also some couch multiplayers for them but they are a bit more 'serious'.
Online multiplayer for PS3 and Xbox is also far superior, more competitive and allows you to develop characters.
In summary: if you have friends over frequently and they would be open to some casual gaming then the Wii is a great buy. But if you are mainly going to be playing single player you will end up bored of it after a couple of weeks.Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0
