Apart from the "...allowing other consumers to vote for a name and design winner before a winner is announced"

Ahh, I'd not spotted that bit, I think I focused in on the short paragraph that says:
The winners will then receive a trip to visit the South Africa winery, Enaleni.

Even if there was 1 winner from the 2, it seems that they didn't actually let the OP know that it was her name that was being used until they had announced the winner as the other person with her name on the label, so they must have known a while before as they had to actually put the name onto the chosen label design, which seems a bit off either way to me, surely someone from Tesco could have taken the time to tell the OP it was her name being used without her having to find out when she saw the other person named as the winner with said name on the label.

It also says in that article that the winner will be announced 22nd July, but the winner wasn't actually announced until 7th August, 2 weeks and 2 days later.

It might be with both a winning name and a winning design being selected whichever of the two had most votes was then overall competition winner.

That's true, I've no idea how it worked as I didn't vote (I don't 'do' FB ;)) although unless there was a vote counter of some sort, there was no way to know who was the highest without having to take Tesco's word for it?

    Thanks guys!

As I say it's all very confusing and the advertising and promo has been extremely inconsistent from the start.
After seeing the winners announcement I thought that perhaps the winner would be whoever had received the most votes overall i.e. label OR name. However if this was the case then it throws up a further issue as the time period for voting for the name was a day and a half shorter than the voting for the label thus potentially increasing the amount of votes the label could receive.

For the label design competition you could just submit an overall design for the label without using a name.

Obviously I will be allowing the company time to respond and clear things up but I was driving myself mad going over it constantly!

Edit to add: Quick question, were there 10 names and 10 label designs? Or a mixture of 10, say 5 of each?

There were 10 finalists for each part of the competition: 10 for the label and 10 for the name.

Thanks for clearing that up, to be honest, I think it sounds even more strange now, if the voting time was less for the name than for the label, it would be very interesting to know how they picked one winner between the two without having a further vote unless they put both of your names in a hat and picked one out!

I don't know if you've seen this, it's on the Tesco Wine Community pages, and once again it says the winner is:
The winning name and bottle design has now been chosen by our judges. Lots of fantastic suggestions and designs were put forward by customers on our facebook app, but there could only be one winner! ENALENI’S DREAM!

    (Bolding is theirs)

    http://www.tescowinecommunity.com/blog/the-social-wine-continued.html

I'm not too sure how they can keep referring to your name as the winner, but put the winning label and the label creator as the winner? The label creator didn't have anything to do with the name? Surely they shouldn't keep saying that the winner is Enaleni's Dream when you're not the overall winner and that's how they seem to be saying it? There was only ONE winner, and the winner is your name?!

    So confusing!

I can completely understand why you're so anxious about it, as it's a once in a lifetime prize, but seems to have been handled very very badly. I hope you manage to sort something out!

Edited to add: Infact the first comment on the page seems to think that the name was picked as the winner as they say:

Well done Rebecca! Pipped me in the final for the name :-) Enjoy the visit out to the Enaleni community.

It seems this person designed the app, maybe they have a copy of the terms somewhere still?

    http://www.rohanchambers.net/case-study/tesco/thesocialwine

There's a photo of the app on there and it does say one winner, it also says:
Here's your chance to get creative and help us decide on the final name of the wine, and even have a say in the design of the label on the bottle itself! And to top it off we'll be picking the best entry to win a trip to South Africa!

It seems the name is the main part to me from that? And the label is a side competition?

There's so many things that don't add up on the main page of that app.

On the right hand side it says:
    About the competition

Here's your chance to get creative and help us decide on the final name of The Social Wine, and even have a say in the design of the label on the bottle itself!

Our judges will shortlist the top 10 entries, who will all win a case of wine! The entry in the top 10 with the most public votes will win a fantastic trip to South Africa, with flights from London to Cape Town included...

If they shortlist the top 10 entries then surely as there were 10 names and 10 labels, there's two prizes? One for each, otherwise they've shortlisted the top 20 entries? Also, the case of wine they mention you've won, is for being in the top 10, not for winning the name part? It also goes against what they say further up when they said that they'll be picking the best entry to win a trip to South Africa!

    Then further down it says:
    The name

    The name of the wine

This will be the name of the wine that will appear on the label, and will become the brand, so be creative! Think Enaleni, South Africa, colours, grapes, whatever inspires you! You've got until the 7th July to enter.

There is a terms and conditions link, obviously you can't see them as it's only a photo, but they should be able to send you a copy surely!

    Then it says:
    The design

    Choose design

Here's your chance to get really creative, For two weeks, we'll be accepting submissions for the design of our label. It does not matter about your creative ability, we'll consider all of your designs or inspirations and our designers will work up the designs into the finished product.

    You can either:

Describe your design to us using 200 characters or fewer.

    or

Upload a photo, sketch, drawing, whatever - here's your chance to go wild!

To help with your design you can download out template which you can print out or upload to software such as Adobe Photoshop

After two weeks, we'll shortlist the best 10 as picked by our judges, and you'll be able to vote on an overall winner. Good luck!

That part is interesting as it says under the label design competition that they will pick an overall winner, it doesn't say that under the name part, but in the wording of the competition, it says that the name will become the brand, and it always mentions the name before the label, like the name is the most important part?

    At the end it says:
Thanks for taking part and good luck!

The Social Wine will be available to purchase in Tesco stores from October 2013.

Winners will be selected on Monday 22nd July 2013.

    Winners? Not winner?

Edited to add: Actually I missed a part on the left hand side:
    How do I get involved?

Now we need you, our social community, to help us decide on the name and the label design for the bottle!

Submissions for wine names will be open for one week, after which we'll shortlist the best as picked by our judges, and you'll be able to vote for an overall winner.

So it does mention an overall winner for the name, if you got the case of wine for being in the top 10, what do you get for being the one picked as the overall winner for the name part? The satisfaction of seeing the name on the bottle? While the label designer gets a trip to South Africa?! Hmm!

Edited (again) to add: Out of interest, were all the label designs picked in the top 10 actual labels, and did they all look professional? I'm just wondering at which point their designers got involved in making the labels into the finished product as they said above, whether it was after they'd picked the top 10, or when the final one was picked?
  • That's horrible Linz. I really hope they respond to your emails and let you go on the trip.

Just wanted to say Bargain (and everyone else finding links) that I think it's really kind that you have spent so much time looking into the matter. You have found some great evidence that will certainly help prove her point.
