Passports

Options
I'm a little confused. Our honeymoon is booked in my maiden name and as I understood it, that was fine provided my passport and holiday paperwork matched on details.

I'm now hearing from a friend that I should be changing my passport into my married name and taking our wedding certificate with me. Did you change your passport or is it ok to travel in your maiden name and do all the paperwork when we get back?

Thanks

  • It's fine to travel in your maiden name my sister in law did just a couple if weeks ago. Plenty of people don't change their passports until years after when it needs to be rebewed as its so expensive to change it.

Yeah I've just been away with my passport in my maiden name. Got it renewed just before the wedding, and considered getting it in married name, but then it would've been post dated so it wasn't valid till the date of the wedding, and I was worried that when booking stuff and passport numbers were required, it wouldn't recognise mine because it wouldn't be valid yet.

We took a copy of our marriage certificate, but never needed it.

  • I got married last year and have travelled a few times since in my maiden name. It's so expensive to change/update passport, especially when you have a few years left on it like I have, so it makes sense to just book in maiden name.

As long as all your booking details match up with the passport, all will be fine. I've heard of people who have done this for years and had no problems.
  • I'm planning to keep mine in my maiden name for some time - partly as I'll still have five years on it after we get married, and partly because we are planning to go to the US for our honeymoon and I am aware they can be a bit funny about visas at the best of times. So I've decided it's just going to be easier to leave it as it is, at least until we come back after the honeymoon.
