It's all pretty normal for an umbrella company, the rate of pay is (hopefully) more than being employed either by the agency or by the client, but there are additional costs (the weekly fee and employers NI usually) that have to come out of the gross pay before the usual tax and employees NI deductions. Really the agency should have some documentation that explains how it works and what expenses can and cannot be claimed, has he asked them for it?

Check the maths on the slip. Its listed on mine but if you add it up it doesn't come out out the total. Its listed there for information.
  • Hi thanks for the replies, we only found out about expenses after him being there 3 weeks, great, and yes the Employers NI IS coming out of his money, as someone who worked in retail management, granted few years ago, I am aware of how things work, i also did his accountancy when he was self employed. I had never come across this before, and he has work for a few agencies in the past couple of years. yes after some digging I did find out that he is working for an umbrella company, rock and a hard place now, job he likes Vs getting ripped every week, although from wat i can see, he can claim back on the fee, if i am reading the limited FAQ info on the site right.
