Making Curtains rather than buying - advice please?

Options
Hi, I don't often post, but was wondering if anyone could offer me some advice? I have got hold of some amazing fabric online at a really cheap price and am going to make curtains with it, however I have been looking at the price of curtain linings and they are almost as much as buying ready made curtains!:(:(:(:(:(

Would anyone have any advice on where I could get reasonable prices lining fabric form please?

It depends if you want thermal or light excluding linings - these fabrics are expensive. Pricing it up, last time I made curtains I bought ready made linings in a sale and attached them to the curtains. Similar price and little extra work.

I've used sheeting to line curtains in windows that don't need to be super-dark.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

Like luxor said, it depends what you want the lining for. I use basic lining fabric for mine just to give body and so they hang better. I've never found that particularly expensive. They are obviously thicker than unlined so help with any draughts but not proper thermal linings IYSWIM.

I also think you need to be sure you're comparing like with like. Yes, you could buy ready made curtains but would they be the same quality as the fabric you're fancying.
  • Dunelm Mill sell fabric quite cheaply. Not sure of the cost of their lining fabric but would assume it equally cheap

You can get a linen type lining for about 2.99 in some areas. Where i live, i can get that for that. Try ebay or large textiles warehouses.

If you live nea Birminham, Try the Rag Market, failing that look around for an end of line store, the quality of home made curtains far out weighs bought, when illness made me give up grovling round the floor makin my own, hubby and I spent £500 at on M. t M, and have never been so disapointed in our lives. Remember you to go for the better quality for money in home made than shop bought..

I'll get off my soap box now !! ;);)

  • I, too, have used Dunelm curtain lining fabric. It isn't expensive and does the job perfectly well.

I have also bought interlining (goes between the face fabric and lining for formal, heavy curtains) but I got that on the internet.

Good luck with your curtains - do post a pic when you've finished.
Aiming to get healthy in 2014.
