official tesco policy on coupons

thought you might be interested - i was given this to read last night at work :D

If you take in one coupon for a branded item [eg baked beans] then they will accept it. If you take in multiple coupons for one item then you need to have bought the item - ie 3 coupons for baked beans means you need to have bought 3 cans in order for tesco to accept them.

if they are the tesco coupons they can only be used for the items specified :)

so basically - if you get hold of a few coupons for one brand - hang onto them and use them one each shop then you can argue the point with the cashier or supervisor if necessary!

Hope this helps - am also going to post it on the vouchers forum :D

I got this email from tesco a while back when I queried the coupon policy.

    It varys in every store.

My friends tesco will take one of each coupon to 1/2 your bill

My local tesco will take one of each coupon even if your bill comes down to 1p (Sainsburys located near this tesco)

My daughter works at another Tesco and they will argue even when Ive presented my e-mail and will only accept one single coupon if you dont buy the product.

This varies as the store manager has the final decision on the store coupon policy.

Best thing to do is take your coupons in and check it out.
Thanks to everyone who posts comps :T
  • this is official policy - i work on the checkouts and this is what we were given as guidance last night so is their most up to date version of it.

however - personally i take all coupons :) mainly cos if someone has done a huge shop i don't know if they have bought the items or not

as long as the till will accept them i will take them

What about internet coupons though? Have they said anything about those? I use the self-scan till now. It doesn't ask questions. :D
  • I'm sorry, but does this:
If you take in one coupon for a branded item [eg baked beans] then they will accept it.

mean they will take the coupon WITHOUT buying the item, as long as you only have one??

And will the self-serve tills accept them or do you have to go through a real person?
  • Hi I rang Tesco head office a couple of weeks ago as got lots of coupons at the ideal home exhibition and they told me that it was down to the store managers discretion. I have 3 Tesco within a 6 mile radius and one of them will not take any coupons unless you buy the product, another will take up to a max of £3 but if you spend £3 they will only take roughly half. The other tesco will take one of each kind so if you have £6 of shopping and £6 of different coupons you get your shopping free. Maybe we should all write to Tesco asking them to standardise there policy as it is certainly confusing for customers and the checkout operators don't seem to know what there doing either.

Can you use vouchers at the self scan in tesco? If you can, what do you do with the vouchers when they have been scanned? Could you accidentally scan the same voucher twice?

Beanie1973 -- The one that takes no coupons unless you buy the product: is that a Tesco Metro? That seems to be the policy for Metros!

There is a slot to put used vouchers in. I don't think you can scan them twice because you're only meant to use a voucher once if you haven't bought the item. The screen prompts you to put the voucher in the used voucher slot but I don't know what would happen if you didn't.

Just been to Tesco to buy 2 items. Used self-scan till. Scanned clubcard 1st. It seems to mess the till up if you leave it til later and you obviously don't want assisstants coming over if you can help it. Bill came to £1.88. Scanned 2 x 50p vouchers (1 from magazine, 1 internet). It said I needed authorization for vouchers. (I've read on these boards you can get 30-40% off before needing authorization). The girl was helping someone else so I waited a bit and then noticed that the screen was saying select payment type, so I selected cash and paid 88p! No need for the girl. So if it says you need authorization, pack your bags or faff with your purse for 30 seconds. I feel a bit guilty actually but this it GREAT! :j
