Friday 9th August - What DFW things are you doing today?

When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym .
But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free.
Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending .
So be proud of those small steps, they really are important
Hope you dont mind me starting this guys (YEY i feel important lol)
Today i will,
Definitely go to the post office to post my items (didnt yesterday!)
We are at soft play today (i forgot its double entry in school hols so that would be £6 for my lot but for £10 you can get a savers card which will get me entry 4.5 times so doing that. Taking 40p cash for 2 lollies (no coffee today!)
Picnic at home for lunch using leftover picnic stuff from yesterday.
Start on my Aunties birthday present tonight (i sew)
Will be bumping some for sale bits on FB.
Hope everyone has a good friday!

Morning all,
Today's started ok; here's hoping it stays that way.
Pippi: What's hokey cokey? Laundry?
The list:
Got £2.50 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers through the post.
Breakfast was spaghetti on toast, the last of the tins from the FoodBank food parcel.
Called bank regarding mistake on credit card statement. Done. I was mis-advised of the amount of an ATM withdrawal fee on a phone call last month. I was told £3 not 3%. I'm getting £12.20 refunded back. Yippee!
Looked at Tesco.com to see what we can do with our Clubcard vouchers. Interested to see that you can exchange £2.50 in vouchers for a cinema ticket. (Link) We'll be buying food with our vouchers but there are other swaps you can do too. (Link)
Check for response from Sky regarding my mis-selling allegation. Nope.
Called RJVB to ask for proof that I'm on the electoral role. Credit searches say we're not and I need to send letters to the credit reference agencies to get the records updated as many of the jobs I'm applying for do a credit search of part of the application process.. We have to pay £20 for a letter of proof. I think this is disgusting.
Hope agency calls about promised job interview next week. I'm ready for them if they do. Applied for another bucket-load of jobs; as has OH. This is really the first time I've been unemployed since I graduated in 1996 and I'm hating it. It's only been about 10 weeks and the jobcentre make me feel like scum, and keep implying I'm not doing enough to get work, when most weeks I'm applying for 30 jobs and am at my laptop 6 hours a day, 7 days a week trying to get work. I'm using all my credit on my phone and have had loads of interviews but as soon as the employer hears I live in the middle of nowhere they say I'll "not make it to work on time each day" and give the job to someone else, despite an excellent attendance record. Some days I've walked five miles to the library and ten miles to the jobcentre free-phone because I've used up all my broadband and phone allowance job-seeking. Next time I "sign on" I'm going to take my laptop in and show the advisor the hundreds of emails I've sent and websites I've visited. Rant over.

Pippi: What's hokey cokey? Laundry?
Yup it is - ages back I think its evolved from 'washing in, washing out, shake it all about'.
And don't let the b**gers get you down regarding the JC.

Hi Friday people,
Today's positive stuff:
*Cleaned whole house using usual stingy amount of products.
*Fed & watered veg.
*Picked & froze chillies.
*Picked a few more tomatoes.
*Froze 3 portions lentil dhal I made last night. Yellow lentils take so long to cook, thought I may as well make a double batch. Also blanched & froze the excess chard I didn't need for stir-fry spicy greens.
*Mortgage letters arrived. Will check all small print before signing.
*Body Shop order arrived. Checked that we got the 40% discount & free p&p.
*Ripped up the meal plans & shopping list I did yesterday & started again, as discovered there are more 'grocery shops' left this month than I thought. Re-did them both. Also delved into the ice-monster depths of the freezer & made a rough list of stuff in there that we can eat the week after next.
*Did a few surveys.
*Planned tomorrow's picnic.
Next job is working out the calories for a biscuit recipe & (hopefully!) baking them later. Very conscious it's weigh-day tomorrow (boooooo!) & if I'm to do better than last week's measly half lb (& to be fair, I think I only achieved that by standing on the scales at a funny angle!), then I don't need to be testing biscuits as they emerge from the oven.
@ally - I have very little experience of the private sector as my career has all been public-sector based, but within public sector, I think there'd be a bit of an 'equalities' issue around your rural place of abode. The recruitment & selection panel should really not take that into account. The assumption should be that if you have applied for a job, then they should take it as read that you have looked at how you are going to get yourself to work on time. If they then find that your time-keeping is inconsistent, then there are always disciplinary procedures in place to deal with that. It is, however, a separate issue & should not be considered a problem just from an address on an application form. How you get yourself to work, including what time you may need to get up, is your business. When I was involved with doing shortlisting/interviewing, we would not have been allowed to use this as any sort of criterion. So I don't blame you for having a bit of a rant.
foxgloves x2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!0 -
Today's Plan:
- Wee extra shift this morning (6:30-11:30) Done
- Pay rent (payday for me today!!) Done
- Pay my grandpa back for car repairs the other week Done
- Make payment to BOS Done
- Ironing
- Tidy Up and Hoover
- Pack up Ebay orders
- Post Ebay orders
- Move Paypal money and jiggle around bank accounts Done
- List some books on Ebay
- Pick OH up after he finishes work and go to Asda fo some bits

Afternoon all, back from soft play, was £3 to get in as they had ran out of savers cards *grumble* so luckily i had a free entry pass for 1 child and had to pay for the other. (baby is free) and then spent 40p on lollies. So £3.40 not too bad, the lady gave me 2 free entry passes for next time though :j
Making lunch from stores, cheese frittata with some veg and toast. Then the kids want cakes so we will make butterfly buns in a bit to take to nan & grandads later so another low spend day
Happy birthday Toothfairybuttkicker

Hi everyone,
Thanks for starting us happytails.
Ziggy - Glad to see you're in a more positive spirit, you should be very proud you paid for those repairs yourself & not on credit, well done!
Ally - If it's any consolation you're not alone, both of my parents are out of work at the moment & it seems even in our part of the country the JC is useless. They told my father to come back in a months time so he did, but was then told he should have come back 2 weeks before & as such, wasn't eligible for money for those 2 weeks, shocking they they can treat someone like that who has paid tax all his life, the only reason he's struggling to find work is because he's just turned 59.
Happy Birthday Toothfairbuttkicker.

Happytails: Thanks for the starter.
Toothfairybuttkicker: Happy birthday. Have you played free Birthday Bingo?; someone on this forum won a prize on this not long ago. Might have been Lilian? (Link) I don't play myself but it seems to be quite popular among DFW-ers.
Foxgloves: Thank-you. "Ripped up the meal plans & shopping list I did yesterday & started again, as discovered there are more 'grocery shops' left this month than I thought." I hate it when that happens.
Perni: That's atrocious.
The list continued:
Downloaded free comedy radio show podcasts. (Link)
OH and I have now both telephone interviewed for the same two jobs (!) by the same two recruitment advisers and are waiting for calls back to hear if we've been selected for the face-to-face round of interviews.
Anyone need cut-price passport photos? (Link)
Dunk stale fairy cakes in coffee instead of throwing them away.
Cheap denture cleaner:
Had an interesting MSE conversation with my dentist that might help some of you or your older relatives. I have to wear a partial-acrylic non-metalic denture following an accident on a mountain a few years ago. (I know, I'm only young; and fortunately you can't tell it's a falsie!) I've always used Tesco-own-brand-Milton-baby-bottle-cleaning fluid which was about £1.50 for a huge 500ml bottle which lasts a year, but our local Tesco has had none of this in stock for weeks. This is what we worked out:
Steradent tablets. 3p each. 30 pack. £10.95/year.
Tesco Daily Denture Cleanser tablets. 30 pack. 2p each. £7.30/year.
Tesco Loves Baby Sterilising Tablets 56 pack. Use a quarter of a tablet each time. 0.3p each quarter. £1.10/year. :T
(Check with your dentist before making any changes, these products might not work for everyone's "wee monster".)
