Hell no! Most are cynical cash ins that insult the intelligence of the kids, lack any depth or quality control and are usually based off of far better games. Avoid licensed games like the plague... Except the lego games which are merely competent but get a pass on that basis at least.

I did say most probably aren't the best, but even if they only play it for an hour or so they're really cheap and they are suitable.

Besides POTC games aren't too bad and Megamind is alright if they like the film - really easy game, no real depth or whatever, but it'll probably keep them amused for a little while. Plus if it's their favourite film they'll possibly just enjoy seeing their favourite characters run around.

Then you got things like Disney Epic Mickey 2 - The Power of Two which has really good reviews. The Legend of the guardians game and the golden compass I mentioned before have decent reviews too on Amazon, although I have heard that the golden compass isn't fantastic. Obviously some kids who like the game though.

Yes, a lot are based off other games and the gameplay is often lacking something or the controls can be a bit awkward, but for a few quid what does it matter? With every game they'll be people who like them and those who don't.

I'd suggest getting the other games over the games based on films, but if it's a film they love or it's really cheap it's worth a go in my opinion.

The Secret of Monkey Island on PC from Steam is £7. The 8 year old might struggle with it but it'll be fine for the older kids and, of course, you can play it when they go home :p

Amazing Alex is very clever logic game for all kids ages (like the old "Incredible Machine" game).

Otherwise I like the games that involve using the motion of the phone, gets the fine motor skills into it and lifts the difficulty

    Popped out earlier.

Found (preowned) a bunch of Lego games for £20 - Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, some racing game and Batman and a Forza game for a fiver. Nothing much else was available at the stores I went to but meh, for £25 if they're not interested I'm not that bothered. I can probably play Forza myself.

(edited) Never mind. Tiredness kicked in and I read "forgot" as "forget".

    I need some sleep.

The Lego games are great, we've been playing them for years, I love playing them with my son he's got all of them, Minecraft is legend! You can't go wrong with Minecraft, that's an excellent game, but you have to have a modern tv if you want two kids to play. How about Guitar hero? My boy and I (he's 10) play guitar hero, I play a harder game then him so it's fairer, cos I ROCK!!! on easy lol.

Incidentally, let me just say Halo..... you'd have to find out if they're allowed to play it, but Halo 3 and the stunning Halo Reach are the most awesome games ever.
