Just been declined by YBS - Need advice - please!

Hello,
My wife and I have just been declined by YBS after over 5 weeks of waiting.
My wife used her old passport as ID. At the time, she saw that the DOB was wrong, so she applied for a new one. On Weds 31st YBS asked to see her old passport again. She picked up her new one on 1st Aug and the passport office refused to give back her old passport, saying that the DOB was wrong, there was time left on it and the new one superceeded th old one. She took this into a YBS branch, along with Marraige, Birth Certificate and signed letter from a Solicitor.
I spoke to them today and they say that because we can't produce the original passport, our application has been declined. They didn't believe me when I said we didn't have it. I am in shock! They have had everything else from us, sometimes twice over.
The whole process has been grueling. At first they lost all our secure documents that we faxed to them - they insisted on this, and as a reult we had two weeks delay. They never respond or call back. After a full week, we get declined.
We are in Full time employment, have a perfect credit rating and only require less than 75% LTV. We are both British born. I thought this would be a formality
The house we are buying is empty and is now back on the market at the weekend. They blankly refuse to budge. To be honest, I feel flat. The whole process has been very painful. I feel like I have been dragged through the mill. Our stuff is in storage and we are renting a holiday at great expense. I've never felt so stressed in my life.
We have paid them nearly £500 for this rubbish. When I asked for the valuation, they won't email it to me and said that it would be a 10 day turn around by post. How more awkward can they be? I just don't understand why we are being treated like this.
Is there anywhere we can go to get this resolved?
Can I get another mortgage turned around quickly with someone else.
Once this has been sorted out, can I complain about losing our documents, etc.
Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

YBS are in general a nightmare.
But yes, you can apply with a new lender. Its possible to get an offer within a week depending on the lender/timescales and info requested.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
