Resignation Advice

Hi All,

I'm currently three months into an 18 month contract, however a better position (permanent) within a different company paying more in a better location has been offered to me and I now have the offer in writing. I want to take this new role but I want to leave my current job in the correct manner.

I have rarely seen my Manager and I believe that she is currently on two weeks leave, how do I effectively submit my resignation? There are no stipulations within my contract advising what notice I need to give and my HR department are also within another location.

Thanks

Speak with the head HR person and submit resignation to them verbally and follow up with an email, arrange leaving date and start date with new employer.

If the written details you have been given (including handbooks available online) do not stipulate notice periods then the statutory notice periods will apply. In law you would therefore be required to give them one week's notice (because you have worked there for more than a month).

Notice needs to be received by the employing organisation: it does not need to be received by your direct line manager in order to be delivered to the organisation but needs to be somewhere appropriate - either HR or someone in the direct line above you (or in accordance with other written instructions).

When does the new employer want you to start with them?
  • I'm due to start on 27th August with the new company but I want to spend this weekend going through my new contact before handing in my notice on Monday morning.

Useful having the bank holiday. Starting on Monday, 26 August, would have required you to hand in your notice before next Monday.
  • Write a letter, pop it into HR, be polite, offer to come back at weekends and help out.
