Handing in notice advice

To be honest, working in HR myself I would suggest that you let them know 4 weeks before you intend on leaving (do that if that is required by contract - we don't know whether that is the case, do we?) - contact the new employer in regards to making sure they do not contact your current company (so if they don't contact the current employer now but wait till the OP has resigned and then don't like the reference, they withdraw the offer and the OP has no job anywhere!).
Why would you do otherwise? If the tables were turned would they give you a heads up?
It could go all smoothly and they appreciate (the courtesy) you telling them (that a reference request is on its way), but it could be that they ask for your notice right away (they could ask but an employee cannot be forced to resign) and you have no work for September.
Also see Daedalus's suggestion above regarding how to present the fact that a reference request is to be received.0
