Why is this aluminium bike 2kg more than the non-Au?

The DBR has an 18.5 inch aluminium compact frame and weighs 16kg: http://direct.asda.com/DBR-Pursuit-Road-Bike---28-inch-Wheels/000946061,default,pd.html?cgid=80122#descriptionsContent
This reflex would surely state it was Au if it was, yet it only weighs 14kg (despite a larger frame and more gears): http://direct.asda.com/Reflex-Cotswold-Mens-Bike---700c-Wheels%2C-22-inch-Frame/000969021,default,pd.html
I'm after a cheap-end tourer or hybrid but the choice of spec is bewildering enough without anomalies like this to cope with!

If all you are after is a cheap tourer then I would not bother about there being only a 2kg difference in weightOwing on CC £00.00 :j
It's like shooting nerds in a barrel0 -
Any bike made out of Au (Gold) is going to be a) heavy, b) not very strong, and c) very, very expensive. I think perhaps you meant Al.0

Actually I have found a gold bike and you're right, it's 3K

Both bikes are very low end with low end components on them. I expect the cheaper of the two is actually made from steel and the road bike is made with a aluminium frame and steel fork.
As these bikes come from ASDA expect them to come in a box where you will need to build the bike. Often when you have to build a bike from a box there will be many things that you will have to do such as true the wheels, align bars and forks, set up gear and brakes, fit pedals etc.....
If you are only going to use the bike for occasional use then these would be OK. If you expect to use the bike every day then I would save my money and get something better.0 -
There is much more to bike weight than just frame material.
I remember the wonder of the Raleigh titanium frames: God knows where they got the titanium piping from, but it was just that, it may as well have been gas piping for the weight of it.
Any frame, badly built, can be very heavy. The very lightest frames now weigh under 1 Kg, a cheap or very heavy duty one can be over 5Kg easily. But all the other components also go to the bikes weight.
If budget is a primary concern I'd look for a second hand bike. You are likely to get far better value for money than you will with whatever ASDA's buyers can source cheapest.0 -
A high quality double butted steel frame can be as light as ali and rides so much better.0

The DBR weighs 12kg according to Argos and Amazon.

So, it's just a typo? Still bewildering, though; this if from Halfords: Rigid steel frame without suspension for an easier ride. Excuse me?If budget is a primary concern I'd look for a second hand bike.0

Buying crap like that from Asda is more of a risky proposition than having a 2nd hand bike repo'ed. Have a look on ebay, there are loads of properly decent bikes on there for less than those two.0 -

I don't want to risk buying a bike which may have been nicked a couple of sales ago. It can be taken off you by the police if the rightful owner spots it.
Not sure what you mean by that.
I have an old hand made rigid steel frame racing bike (inherited) and it is very easy and very nice to ride
Cheap bikes are not worth buying IMO. have a look at Paulscycles they often have some decent offers on older models0
