Struggling with a sport and cant decide whether to pack it in.

I am undecided what to do in this situation and just wonder what others would do. I've been climbing to an average level for the last few years, however my interest has gone in fits and starts.
I was doing o.k ish with this until a friend died in a climbing accident last year. They were very good miles better than me and it has set me back as Im now sometimes quite frightened to go and when i do go Im not as good as I once was.
I find very easy climbs very boring and frankly would rather do something else than do these. I prefer doing climbs that are slightly more challenging but not really hard if you understand.
Someone within my group has told me that some of the others have been quite nasty and have been laughing about me behind my back. I've in no way put anyone else at risk or been a burden etc so thats not the issue.
I now cant decide whether to pack the activity in or not and moving on to doing another sport. The problem is that a lot of my social life is tied around this.I just cant decide what to do. What would others do in this position?

I wouldn't give up the climbing, I'd change the way you do it. I'd reduce the amount of time spent with this group of climbers, and perhaps look at longer, but safer climbs.
Also, who not get some qualifications in instruction help out with children's charities or something.
Have to say I have been indoor climbing regularly (as in 2 times a month) for 2 years, but I'm petrified of climbing outside, and those people I've met are a little too patronising for my personality, and I don't like the idea of any formal groups, so I'm pretty much stuck climbing indoors for now.0 -
Yeah,I'll think about joining a different group.
I personally am not interested in helping children with any activities as its not my thing. Theres too much these days of them complaining about this that and the other and parents wanting to sue people to get compensation. Fair enough for those people who enjoy working with them.0 -
Do you do much bouldering? I've just started taking more of an interest though I've been top roping/leading for a few years now.
I like the personal challenge of working out a problem, and though it can be fun to boulder with people it's equally fulfilling alone (indoors obv).0
