BBQ party, opinions wanted!

I'm having a BBQ party on Friday, about 10-15 guests starting from 6pm. Since it's a 50th birthday, I wanted to make it a bit more fancy and make little canape's and homemade dessert pots.

I'm going to do the usual hotdogs, homemade burgers and marinade some chicken pieces. Some homemade potato and pasta/rice salads.

As for the canape's, was going to make salmon and cream cheese pinwheels (using flour tortillas), fruit kebabs, cucumber chunks with some piped salmon mousse, salad on a stick, mini stuffed tomatoes, choc covered strawberries and a layered blueberry cheesecake in a clear cup with a spoon.

Is this something you would enjoy at a barbecue, or is it too formal?

Also, how much food do I need for 10-15 people?

Sounds lovely although I think that possibly the cheesecake might be a bit awkward to eat. Finger foods are definitely the way to go - after all if you've got a drink in one hand you've only got one hand to eat with!

No idea on amounts but remember that if you do too much you're going to be eating BBQ food for days after, lol! I wouldn't go too mad on the amounts of chicken, burgers etc and make sure that there is plenty of salad, rice salads, pasta salads and that sort of thing as well.

We've done several lately .. salads.. pasta/rice etc was barely touched.. the salad mostly ended up in the bin.

The meat disappeared superquick. Marinated chicken on a stick went superfast. Chicken seemed way more popular than lamb or steak. We had a fair few sausages left that went in a casserole and some burgers I sent DS1 home with.

buns and biscuits and little cheesy nibbles were hoovered.

Homemade cheesecakes not so much.. but that's ok.. more for me :D

easy to eat foods, well cooked meat & salads all go down well at a BBQ, or you could do a paella on the bbq.
Try this as an accompaniment to the meats/fish etc.

    BULGUR WHEAT

110gms (cooked) Bulgur Wheat (A bit wet following pack instruction, would use less water or cook like rice in microwave cooker)

1/2 yellow pepper chopped (or your choice of colour)

    2-3 Spring Onions chopped

Tin of chickpeas drained & rinsed

    Peppered Mackerel,Tuna etc. (Your Choice)

Mix ingredients together, toss in the fish

Allow the dish to chill for several hours.

(The bulgur wheat should be dry not wet, like couscous, if not dry, put the bulgur wheat in a metal sieve, put a little water in the bottom of the pan, place sieve over the top & heat the water, the steam will dry & separate the wheat).

This is a basic recipe, try adding flavoured oils, vinegars, mixed beans, left over cooked meat, cheese, fruit, nuts etc, whole baby tomatoes, almost anything goes (omit what you don’t like – add what you do – chop and change depending on what you have in and what you feel like eating).

This makes a good meal for home or to take to work and will keep at least three days in the fridge.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

I would go for 10 burgers, 10 chicken legs and 10 saussages if you have so many different other stuff too I think.
Or 15 if you want to make sure everyone has choice of everything, but you might have some left for the freezer.

"Paella and Pimms" parties seem to be all the rage round here at the moment.......
I think everyone's got bored with having too many BBQ's ?
Must admit - I might even try one next.

Slices of garlic bread, breadsticks with a hummous or cheese and chive dip, for starters.

If it's really hot, slices of water melon or cantaloupe melon for dessert

Or griddled peaches or nectarines, halved, with cream or ice cream.
