I have been a Civil Servant for the last 25 years, for the same Govt Dept (not telling which one !) always at the same grade (2nd grade on the Organizational Chart).

(In fact when I joined you were either permanent or casual none of this TFTA tomfoolery !).

Do I ever regret joining ? - no

Would I recommend my Dept to a friend as a place to work ? - reluctantly NO, UNLESS it was a permanent job.

For the last 3 1/2 years I have been working my 37 hours over 4 days and having every monday off, which I see as a perk.

You certainly wont get rich being a Civil Servant , but if you are recruited to the right Govt Dept and work in a tax raising role , you should be OK.

    Good luck !.

I think the answers above say it all really. I have been a Civil Servant for many years and it's the security that appealed to me. I was not thinking of the pension when I joined, but I am now! There are many advantages in joining the Civil Service, but high wages is not one of them.

The Civil Service is a good employer in my opinion.

Just give them plenty of time!

Regarding the bullying causing you to leave, you have been honest and that was the best course of action and can only reflect well on you.

Thanks for the new replies. It's just so difficult now that my current employer is waiting for me to hand my notice in but I can't since I don't have an official start date.
I also have a question which perhaps nobody will be able to answer. I have 4 suitable references as far as I am aware (2 from temp agencies and 2 from permanent employers). In one of the temporary jobs which I was in last year, I was bullied by my manager and this pushed me to walk out. This particular employer has a reputation for treating any female employees this way. I was employed by him for 2 months and I know for a fact that he will not give me a reference. I presume this would jeopardise my job offer from the civil service. Does anyone know?
I was honest with the HR department and told them that I left on bad terms due to bullying. I also pre-warned them that they probably wouldn't get any communication from him.

You need to be clear with the resource team, they are under strict guidelines to what they can and can't do.

State, 'You may contact any of these 4 people for personal/professional/academic references'.

'This is my list of employment over the last 3 years, I give permission for them to be contacted for 'dates and duties' verification only.

They aren't permitted to go beyond the permission you have given them.

Remember getting anything done in the Civil Service is like elephants mating: it's done at high level, it's done with a lot of noise and it takes 2 years to see the results!

hardly unlike the public sector to do this... i recall recently the govt wanted all pay to be made to them, so they could take tax and distribute funds. but i read the paper about once every 6 months so not sure where that one got to

They may not even call the places, but just want a thorough record

MrsJ, I think you need to be more patient! You were offered the job at the end of June. It's only the beg of Aug now, so that's about 5 weeks which is not a long time to collect the info they need. I was interviewed and offered a job in October and I didn't actually start until Jan.

When I started working for the civil service (12 years or so ago) it took two full months from the application deadline date to me starting work. And I had virtually no employment history for them to look through, I was fresh out of school. These things just take a long time, no idea why.
