Best material for a heated towel rail?

Hi all, just looking for some advice :j

I'm looking for an electric towel rail but the only ones I can find are chrome and I'm worried that they are likely to rust. Would stainless steel be a better option?

Cheap chromed ones can rust. A decent one shouldn't.

    Cheers

  • Great, thanks for the reply! Will make sure it isn't a cheap one and we should be okay.

Your biggest problem will be finding one that doesn't leak in the 1st place, my success rate with towel rads bought from the net is about 50/50, there are so many soldered joints.

I guess in normal service, ie they get a heat cycle every day, they won't rust, but out of use in the wrong conditions, ....

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Ahhhh, the ones I sourced for myself were perfect, maybe I was lucky, I've done about 6 others for family and I think 4 from 6 were returned.

The situation is accepted by the suppliers, in each case all they asked was send a photo, (quite how you photograph a leaking rad which seeps ant about 5 joints, I don't know, I just slashed water on it), a replacement was sent out by return.
They didn't even want the faulty ones back, so it must be common place.

  • Presumably mine shouldn't leak as I'll be buying an electric one? :p We don't have a gas supply in our flat so electric is our only option.

But they are still fluid filled, albeit oil rather than water;);)

The rust question stays the same though, as it's external conditions or poor exterior plating that will govern that.

    Stainless steel every time

Cheap plated items such as kudox offer no warranty against surface finish.....I know as I had to replace over a dozen in less than 12 months

These where fitted in ventilated bathrooms with a high flow centrifugal fan and system inhibitor. Rust rash on the plating

Reina lunas are what I consider to be the best. Approx £250 for a 600x 1200

Have been fitting Pheonix Athena, decent quality and approx 30% cheaper than reina
