Quick question - cheaper to make own?

Morning all,
Just a quick question really, apologies if this is not in the correct place, todays awful weather and much cooler atmosphere has got me thinking about winter and more to the point saving money on our gas bill this winter. Last year I wanted to buy us all those fleece 'onesies' to wear in the house only none of this doing the weekly food shop in them as I have seen  but they were quite expensive at approx. £18 each that's quite an outlay for the 5 of us! I do have a sewing machine and although a novice I am getting better all the time and have started to make clothes, I have seen a sewing pattern for £10 and priced up the fleece needed (approx. £4 a metre) possibly get away with those cheap fleece blankets (B&M etc) for the younger 2 boys, do you think this will work out more cost effective? I am unsure of what to do really. Thank you :)
Proud mummy to 3 beautiful boys! :D

First time around it might not be quite a mpney saving, but it will be eventually. I would make them rather than buy them.

Costs of patterns is mind boggling, once you have the pattern you can adjust it fit as the boys grow..

I know that's what I was thinking, the outlay at first may not be entirely cheaper but like you say I can get more than one use out of a pattern, and with them growing all the time it might be better in the long run, I may have a rummage and see if I can unpick my youngest sons from last year and make my own pattern to trial it and see how it goes on an old fleece blanket. Thank you

can you make your own pattern? I made a pattern from a skirt which I have worn for years each summer. Took a bit of faffing and working out and I practiced making a skirt on some old fabric and it worked out ok. Maybe give this a go? But as you say £6 for a pattern, isn't a lot. Good luck.:D

  • The real MSE way would just be layering up the clothes you already have ;-)

What about dressing gowns? We all have dressing gowns we put on when cold.

Buy cheap fleece blankets and put them over everything - use on top of bedsheet, sofa etc. Fleece holds heat really well.
  • Nothing like a cosy onsie to wear around the house, I have one and have used it now for three years, so cosy warm and less resticive than layering clothes to keep warm

We do have dressing gowns and the boys each have their own slanket type fleece thing but I think the onesies will work out better and less restrictive especially for 3 active boys but thanks for the tips :)
