Aunt Bessies Home Chips.

I always buy these, they are the best frozen ones I think.

However, the last bag I bought was not up to scratch, small 'ends of potatoes' chips, fine for kids but, I don't have any I buy them for myself and like a uniformed shaped chip, which is what I normally get from Aunt Bessies.

I was so angry, I e mailed them with my concerns.
I had an e mail reply , apparently it is because last year was so wet they could not get the usual sized potatoes. They apologised but, also said it may continue this way until they get the next crop.

They did send me a good will voucher for £5, which I will not be using until late autumn and hope the chips are of their usual standard.

Funnily enough I had a similar issue with Kettle crisps recently. I bought some ridged ones advertised as 'the ultimate hummus shovel' but when I opened them they were full of tiny scraps, useless for hummus. I could tell they hadn't been broken in transit.

Kettle sent me 6 bags as an apology but didn't say anything about problems with the potato harvest. I suspect that may have been the reason though.

Buy potatoes and make your own. Cheaper.
  • I haven't made my own chips for about twenty years! McCain homefries do the job for me and I don't need to keep a pan of fat on the go forever. Plus, I'm a lazy cow and don't peel anything if I can get away with it!

I like Asda's marabel potatoes, they make fantastic chips! Although at £2.25 a bag, not very MSE, but to die for all the same!

We have Aunt Bessie's frozen chips as well and they are fine.

Agree totally - I don't think you can get a better oven chip than MCain Home Fries. I find the best price is usually in Farmfoods.

I prefer to make my own and I do not fry them either.

I cut the chips with skin left on, then pop them into the microwave for two minutes, take then out let them cool and then bag for the freezer. Whe I want chips, I take out the reuired amount , sprinle with oil, and seasoining and pop them in the oven as the fish or meat is cooking. the come out crisp and crunchy and fluffy inside. I also grow my own potatoes, so when they are dug I get to work and prepare them for various uses. I do the same with roat potatoes.

I am glad you got an explanation from the chip maker as why the quality was not up to par.

Well, thanks to my dodgy joints which makes peeling and chopping veg painful, I'll stick to the 'processed crap'.

Anyway, Aunt Bessie's are way better than McCain's!
