Nikon always used to concentrate on the top end of the market, which is why most professionals had one (or more !).

They have now gone for the mass market as well, their "point and shoot" cameras are also very good. I have had two and have now moved up to an SLR (again).
I would recommend any Nikon without hesitation; but there are plenty of other good cameras around - Canon, Olympus, Pentax............. pick one you like.

The only word of warning I would give is:- don't get seduced by the number of mega pixels the camera claims to have. 6mp is plenty, UNLESS you are planning to have poster size prints done !

It really depends on what you intend using it for, and what features you require.
