Exercising With Back Problems
Comments

You need to build up your core strength - don't do any high impact stuff, it will make the back issue worse.
Lots of help online to work on core strength, but a good PT will help too.0 -
I have had lower back problems for many years. I had an MRI scan last yearwhich showed degenerative discs. Seemed to prove that I couldnt do exercise as it would make things worse.......
One year on, with a magical personal trainer who comes to my house once per week I am a different person. I told her all my tales of woe and she would nod and smile and still make me do ten more of whatever exercise she had me doing
My core is now amazingly strong and the result is 90% less back problems. I wish I had a video of me then and now to show the difference a good trainer can make. Some of the things she has me doing would have been impossible a year ago in both mind and body.
Personal training worked for me . Give it a go, you have everything to gain0 -
This is going to sound a bit mad if you don't believe in alternate medicine, but go see a Homeopathist.
My mum has collapsed discs in her neck/upper spine. The doctor said she'd need to wear a collar and manage the pain.
She's been on homeopathic treatment for it since, still gardens, rides a pushbike, walks the dog.
It might be worth seeing if swimming helps you, it's by no means the same, yours is more serious, but a couple of years ago I had proper whiplash (not to the no win no fee variety). I started off by sculling a couple of lengths on my back and it really, really helped. I hit the point where I was pretty much swimming all day every day and it's amazing the difference it makes to your fitness.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

bad bad bad advice, and not what OP was asking
How do you know what type of exercise the OP needs, that would not cause pain or injury? What qualifies you to give this type of advice?
Even worse if someone with a serious medical problem was to just pick a random video from you tube or a routine from any website, who know what kind of damage they could end up doing to themselves.
Your advice is dangerous.0 -
A friend who has had a serious back and neck op finds swimming and Pilates helpful, but she had to search around to find a knowledgeable teacher.0
