Average daily shop spending?

Options
I am a single student and have started adding up my monthly food bills and am shocked to see I am spending on average £6 a day!

I really don't know where it goes. I don't by junk food or sweets etc.
The most expensive items are meat but I buy on bulk from Iceland.

How much do most people spend a day?

I also spend around £6 a day. This covers:

    - toiletries (infrequent purchases)
    - one or two pieces of fruit for breakfast
    - a joint of meat and a minimum of three types of vegetable, to be slow cooked in gravy for the week's lunches.
    - an evening meal of some description, usually one or two types of vegetable, plus a potato product, with chicken, fish, a casserole steak or similar. Alternatively, meatballls and pasta or ingredients for wraps.

Lunches cost £1.25 per day, averaged out. Breakfasts are no more than £1, and toiletries and evening meals make up the remaining £3-4 average.

When you mention 'daily shop' do you mean you actually shop every day? If you do that's probably part of the problem as the more often you go into shops the more you will spend.

I spend about £50 a week for 2 of us so that's about £3.57 a day per person, about half of what you're spending. I'd say that from reading on these boards £25 per person is pretty average and many do it for less.

I'd suggest (if you don't already) you do one weekly shop and try to have as many NSDs a week as possible. Also, get a notebook and write down every penny you spend. Then you'll see where the money's going.

If it helps you could post a typical menu so that people can give suggestions where you could save.
