Reread the thread and see how you are coming across to an outsider. When I was a recruiter I would not consider taking on someone with your attitude.

Employers want people with friendly and open attitudes - you come across as very defensive.
LOL I am very friendly and go out of my way to help many people in work and out of work actually

What about being in a job and the employer shows you a CV like I have already says and asks you 'do you think they are English'?

That was my example of discrimination in the private sector

It is not great. In the first sentence you say the same thing twice. You mention people working in a team, but nothing about customers/ clients. Adjustments are made to make services accessible, and to ensure everyone has equality of opportunity, not to make sure people don't 'feel left out'.
Too late now and wont get the interview I guess.

The job is not offering a service at all and on the phone you have no idea who you are talking to age, race or anything else other then sex unless you are female with a very deep voice.

I have had people tell me they wont speak to a woman as I cant be the boss!! LOL

If you are speaking to people on the phone then you are offering a service of some sort. People would be calling you for a reason (a service).

Try to think about the bigger picture. As an example, during the baby coverage last week a tv presenter was trying to get a policeman to eat some cake. Nothing wrong with that, except that he had not realised the policeman was a Muslim and it is Ramadan. The policeman laughed it off, but that could have quite easily resulted in a complaint.

What's eating cake got to do with it? No one sits at work and asks what religion you are, so they?

I know I don't but I know what Ramadan is and they cant eat or drink and a few other things between sun rise and sun set for a month (29 to 30 days)

Only if the tv presenter was forcing it on the person could there be a compliant. Offering a cake to someone is not an offence if you didn't know their religion.

    My reply was

I am committed to treating everyone from different backgrounds and needs with the same respect and believe everyone should be treated the same regardless or race, age, disability etc. I also believe that some adjustments should be made where necessary for people to work in the team and not to feel left out.

    Ok probably a rubbish reply

When I say 'treat the same' I mean why would you treat a 20 year old more or less favourably than a 50 year old?

TBH, I don't think the answer is very good as there is a big difference between treating everyone 'the same' and treating them 'equally' and your answer gives the impression that you don't understand that crucial difference.

Is the role being applied for a public facing one at all? If so you also need to recognise that equality is important not only for employment reasons (ie in dealing with colleagues) but for service users/customers too, which your answer doesn't address.

As an example, treating everyone the same regardless of their abilities/background etc might mean you give everyone information, printed in English on a bit of paper - how would that work for people who are visually impaired, who have learning disabilities that mean they can't read or who aren't fluent in English? Only having information available in one format (everyone being treated the same) means that people who that format doesn't work for are disadvantaged. To ensure all the groups are treated equally you should make the information available in formats to suit the different needs of the service users.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

No its not public facing at all.

I meant the same as in why treat someone less favourably? Companies do, do that - I don't!

Its too late now to change it.

An example I experienced was a staff meeting where food was provided for staff but not one person in charge thought of a team member who was a Hindu and didn't eat beef but HR and the managers only put on beef burgers and thought nothing of it. I was the one who raised it with one the directors and they got the chef to get some other food together. Were they not discriminating against him in religious grounds as they assumed we all ate beef?

Some companies would never change the way they do things to accommodate one member of staff like reports in bigger fronts or something hence probably not taking them on in the first place.

Mine freaked out like a loon when someone (the 1st member of staff ever) told them they were pregnant

You are surely bordering on being a troll?

Asking someone if they are a bigot is an acceptable question, funny enough, stupid people will either answer the question wrong or answer it unconvincingly, boom, there goes their application.

Yes one manager in one company which asks that question may be a complete jackass, THAT DOES NOT INVALIDATE THE QUESTION.

I actually replied 'how do I know' and handed the CV back to them
