Has the unemployment rate (especially for NEETs) passed you by?

Not at all. I have a son who has just graduated. This is an apprenticeship. How much are they paying her? Some things are more important IMO.

Google tells me it's £2.65 an hour. Woop de do!

So it is better to be unemployed than to have an apprenticeship?

Not necessarily but if I had to choose between a family landmark birthday holiday and sweeping up other peoples hair clippings it would be a no brainer.

£2.65 an hour is taking the p***.

Especially if they're saying that they can't operate without her.

There is nothing wrong with a 17 year old with few (no?) qualifications earning £2.65, especially when that includes training in their desired field.

I wish your son luck in finding work - hopefully he has a better attitude than you.

I'd rather pay him £2.65 an hour myself not to undervalue himself. If he can't find reasonably paid work in the UK I will probably offer him the plane fare to Australia or New Zealand and he can try his luck there.

I may be wrong but I don't think they let you in to Australia unless you already have a job. Not sure about New Zealand though, they do have an awful lot of sheep that need looking after:)

    At 17 I was earning £2.50 an hour. At 18 £2.75. I bought a house at 19.
