Great article. The shame is that the thinking largely stops with: stupid public.
I used to be a lot more optimistic about people in my youth; now I believe that many are ignorant by choice. However, people don't come to think foreign aid is one of the top three areas of government spending, rather than one of the smallest, on their own.
The news media is clearly misinforming people. I'm very dubious about efforts to regulate the press, however the bias in press reporting is causing massive harm to society and our country. Look at the MMR scare for an extreme example. This is only going to get worse as more people get their information from diverse sources over the internet which are even harder to regulate.
They should put up plaques or billboards all over the country with Danny Baker's immortal quote: "There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known"There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

You're right in that we need to change the attitude of some segments of the society that ignorance on certain matters is fine, normal or even something to brag about.
However, as Fox news has shown in America, taking an interest in news but getting it from a poor source can make you less well informed than people who take no notice of it!Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...0
