I've just finished Planescape Torment... my word was that a tough RPG.

It was unforgiving as all hell, with punishing combat, a reliance on your own memory and intelligence to work out what to do and what to say to characters, and while death was not punished for The Nameless One (the player character), ally death was.

It was...so.....mean, but I beat it .

But as for current games not being hard? I would like to point you towards:

Super meat boy, FTL, Spelunky, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, Cave Story+, VVVVVV, Treasure Adventure Game, Witcher 2 and loads more I've forgotten about. No, they're not really mainstream and a lot are indy games, but you just have to know where to look for your challenge.
