Vodafone bill (Cabot)

Hi
a couple of years ago i took a contract phone out for my brother and he payed it for over a year then ran the bill upto £500+ then they cut the phone off and vodafone managed to contact me somehow

i then told them that i had taken it out for my brother and after that never heard any thing after so i assumed they had contacted my brother to arrange payment then years later, Today i recieve a letter from cabot to pay a outstanding amount of £1,251.94

i know im am liable for this as its my name on the contract but surely vodafone have an obligation to keep me informed of any charges being applied to the account.
it has been about 5 years since vodafone contacted me about the account and there have never been any letters or phone calls from them.

  • Is there anything i can do because i cannot afford to pay this as my hours have been cut and asking my brother to pay this is like trying to make a pig fly

I'm struggling to understand the timescale.

If you get to 6 years (5 in Scotland) without acknowledgement by payment or in writing, the debt becomes statute barred and is effectively uncollectable.

Alternatively, you can set up a payment plan.

Or do you have other debts and so should we be looking at the bigger picture?
