Advice Pls: Student card replacement

I lost my wallet last night, very annoying. To add to the annoyment I discovered that my university charges £10 pounds for a replacement! I understand that the cards are produced on the spot and takes a couple of minutes.

Ten pounds seems to me to be extortionate and disproportionate to the cost incurred by the university. Is there anyway I can challenge this fee? How am I best to go about it?

It's not so much the money it's the principle. Presumably the cost is designed as a deterent.

Thanks.

You'l find that the cost is to stop people selling them on Ebay.

you could also just not get a new card and pay normal prices elsewhere. Then it puts the £10 in perspective

You may find flexibility if you had your wallet stolen i.e. if it wasn't your fault. But if you lost it, then it's reasonable to ask for a charge to replace it.

It's also not just the cost of the card, but the laminate/cover, the photo, the machine to produce them, the time taken by a member of staff....

What makes you think it will be cheap? As said above you need to buy the card and machine to produce it (particularly if its chipped/has a magnetic strip), salary the person who provides it (you cant just hire them for the two minutes) and potentially have to do something about cancelling the old one if it acts as an electric key as well. £10 seems quite reasonable.

Also i suggest you compare the cost with buying a standard NUS/citizen card etc.

I got my purse stolen and it was £14 for a new set of student cards (we had two before the new system was brought in at Paisley).

I think £10 is lucky. I used to work in that sort of business and it costs around £20. Stop complaining

£10 is about average. I think in part it's to encourage students to take good care of their campus cards! When you consider the cost of buying the specialist printer, the card to print on, the time taken for the person to print it, it's not an unreasonable charge. Sorry, think you're stuck with it.

Hi barleyboy. I have also lost my student card in my pencil case, after an exam on Wednesday!! I phoned up my UNI and they also charge £10. However, I have finished now for this year and don't really need my card and next year we get a new one anyway. So am going to wait until September for my new one. I have still got my student NUS card but will have to also pay for a new one next year. If you are still doing exams and need to show id you are allowed to use driving licence with photo id or a passport. If you think your wallet was stolen, you report it to the police and get a crime number. If you tell UNI your crime number and they accept it was stolen then you won't have to pay the £10 for a new card. Good Luck.

I lost my NUS card and it cost me on the NUS website £4 to replace it.

    hope this helps :)
