anyone here got a joint account?

Good evening - hope everyone is well :)

As fellow DFWs can anyone reccomend a good joint account? One that earns you interest?

Thing is me and OH are moving and getting a mortgage together. The idea of the joint account is that we put a set amount of money in each month (over 1k) and the joint bills get paid out of that but we still keep our seperate accounts. With that amount of money going in we want to earn interest on it where we can.

So any suggestions would be great :D

no one has a joint account then :o

My boyfriend posted something similar on the current accounts board and got this reply:
I hope you trust your gf. As this is a joint account, YOU will be responsible for any debt (overdraft) that she runs up on it (i.e. even after she stops being your gf). Not just half of it, the full amount.

I was a little insulted to that LOL i thought you cheeky git blaming me for the posibility of running up debt. Must be a bloke thing, never heard of a bloke running up debt before  ;)

Must add that no debt will be run up on the joint account - the idea is that all the bills get paid out of this and we jointly put money in each month for our bills and wont get used as a "proper" account.

That was a nice reply  I'm sensing some bitterness there.

Hubby and I have a flex account with the Nationwide, we do get interest, but don't know how it compares to others TBH. It suits us as we have a local branch and I can bank online.

Hi sammiboo! My OH and I have had a joint 'rent/mortgage/bills a/c' since we moved in together nearly two years ago. We started off renting together and have just bought a house. We pay exactly the same amount each into there per month - worked out and agreed by both of us - and mortgage payments / insurance and all bills come out.

We actually pay more in each month than is needed, so that we constantly have an 'emergency fund' in case the boiler blows up or something like that. Which is a nice feeling.

If anything else needs to come out - for example we've just bought a new wardrobe - we discuss it before we buy!

It's worked really well for us actually. It's nice to pay a lump sum each month and then know how much money I've got left, and that all the bills are sorted by D/D and I don't have to worry about them!

It also means that my debt is kept seperate from my OH, as he is brilliant with money and I'm not so much. Well not until I discovered this site anyway! We both have a debit card for the joint account but trust each other not to use it on the sly - and we both have access to internet banking so can keep an eye on it.

    Hope this helps!

Oh, and well done on paying off such a big amount of your debts!

I've got a Nationwide Flexaccount joint account too. No complaints. There's no fantastic interest rates around since you really have to have a 'current' account to pay the mortgage out of. Sorry, that's pretty useless! :D

I would just add that if you have an account with the same place as you get your mortgage from, if you want to make overpayments into the mortgage online they tend to go through quicker.

Thats the plan with us - pay in to it seperately each month with a little extra so there will always be money in there and gradually build it up. We are keeping our seperate accounts for our own debts and spending then this will be for everything house wise.

I happen to agree with that original post:p

Women do run up debt - shoes handbags etc.

Men do have debt, but only cos they have to fund "rich" womens lifestyles

    PS

Hows the house move going Sammi?
