New tax code - in July?

Hi all,

A quick question.

I left my previous job on July 1st and started my new job on July 1st.

My p45 stated tax code 944L and I have given this to my new employer. I have received in the post (dated 9th July) a new tax code for 936L which mentions I'm unemployed!

Has something gone wrong or is this normal?

Also is there a calculator out there which can calculate the tax ni and student loan payable on a monthly salary and a lump sum? I want to check I didn't lose out by getting my SMP as a lump and some owed hours on a 0T tax code from my previous employer.

What reason have they given for the change from 944 to 936?

Apparently it's benefits in kind - but i haven't had a company car and I haven't had any loans or mortgages. (My parents have the letter, hmrc won't listen when I say I've moved) and they have just read out the back page to me where the deductions are.

It should have been applied in April - seems a bit blooming late to be applying it now!

Also it states I am "between jobs", which I am not. Do I just hand it to my new employer and they sort it? I would ask but I'm on leave for a bit and am concerned I will owe money I don't have :(

If you had a company car your tax code would be a lot smaller. Dont worry, the difference in code is only £16 in tax if you are a 20% tax payer.

    I will earn £35k this year so I assume I'm a 20% tax payer.

Ok £16 is live-with-able! Thank you :) I will pass it onto my new employer and ask them to look at it.

It sounds like I'm not likely to end up owing a lot, which is what I was worried about.

your employer can only accept instructions form HMRC

you need to phone HMRC and explain the situation

So hmrc really do think I'm unemployed? Despite there being no gap in my employment at all?

    Why would this happen?

What CLAPTON said - although it's only £16, this is MSE, and that £16 is better in your purse than in the hands of George Osborne!
