When to pay tax

Hi guys,

Probably a silly question, but I've submitted my tax return for 2012-2013 and HMRC have calculated my tax for the year, but haven't said when or how to pay. I done the paper version, so assumed I would get a paying in slip. Tax is a minimal amount, but don't want to get fined for late payment.

Can someone please tell me if its due due 31st July or 31st January? Can I get a paying in slip or pay over the phone?

Thanks for any help.

Have they sent you an SA302 form? If so page one (that doesn't have any calculations on) says - Thank you for your tax return. I enclose my tax calculation--- etc. My calculation shows the tax due ( etc ) due by 31 January 2014. This was their response to my paper tax return so I assume yours will be the same.

Payment deadline is 31 January - unless you're required to make payments on account you don't need to worry about 31 July (shouldn't think it applies as you say tax is minimal).

You will get a paying slip in December or early January, although you can make a payment over internet banking using your tax reference as a payment ref. without needing one. See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/selfassessment.htm for useful info :)

Thanks for the response. How will I know if I have to make a payment on account ? My total bill is less than £500 for the year

If you need to make a payment on account they would have told you. I think that your bill needs to be over £2000 before they do that. If you filed by post then it should say on the paperwork which includes the calculation that they sent you.

If you had to make a payment on account it would be based on the previus tax year i.e. 2011/12. Its actually a £1,000 threshold, and less than 80% of your total tax for that year would have needed to have been collected at source. You would have had a payment reminded and payslip by now

Ahh thanks guys. Last year I didn't make enough to pay tax, so just going to ring and ask for a payment slip for this year :-)
