Cheap old console games at charity shops.

I would love to get the new consoles when they come out the PS4 and Xbox one. But I havent even got the PS3 and 360 yet.

In our house we still have the PS2 which is our DVD player, and an Xbox first generation. Around a hundred games for each. We also have a wii one oh and a DSi and a PSP. I am collecting a large collection of UMD disks also buy off ebay if less than 99p.

We fequently visit charity shops for clothes and other things. I love to find a pile of DVDs including games and with a few other things ask for a little discount. Most shops around me round it down a bit.

I am even slowly starting to see some PS3 and 360 games appear in charity shops. So when the PS4 and new xbox come out I may try and pick up cheap last gen consoles.

But why rush when there are so many good PS2 titles for quid or two in charity shops.

I agree that there are many great PS2 titles that are still worth playing. Charity shops can be good for finding a deal, but I generally find my local charity shops charge £2+ for even the worst PS2 games (e.g. FIFA) and they charge even more for PS3 games. The older FIFA games on this gen aren't even worth 10p now, but they'll still sell them for a few quid.

Charity shops don't have a clue about the price of games usually, which can either go in your favour or make you laugh. Charity or not, I'm not paying £2+ for a game I can get elsewhere for 50p. I have found a few decent bargains though :)

The charity has to make money though - it is not going to make much selling games for 10p. They are not game specialists like games shops that can sell products for that cheap.

They get everything free and selling loads of games at 10p would get them more than them sitting there at £2+ and not selling.

I've seen games sitting in charity shops for months and when they don't sell they eventually get bagged up and sent to another branch. So that's time wasted, petrol costs and staff costs.

I'm not suggesting they sell them at 10p. Many are worth more and game shops don't sell them that cheap. I just think (at least with my local shops) they are often really overpriced and no one buys them. They could sell some for less than a £1 (like FIFA games). More chance of them selling.

On my phone I have a list of the top 100 PS2 and Original Xbox games, with the price they typically sell s/h on amazon, so If I come across something interesting in a charity shop I can quickly see if it's worth the money. Found a copy of GTA Liberty City Stories the other week for £2 amongst the plethora of FIFA/PES titles, which was well worth it.

Haven't found Shadow of the Colossus for £1 yet though:(

Having a smartphone certainly helps for looking up prices - always worth price checking. Prices can change from one week to the next though so I never have a set list of games. My mind is filled with hundreds of games and prices anyway lol.

I was looking out for that. I found ICO for £3 ages ago in a charity shop, but not seen Shadow of the Colossus anywhere. Both dropped a bit in price though because of the PS3 version which is now cheaper to buy and you get both games instead of just one.

It is incredibly rare, but sometimes mooching around these charity (thrift stores they are called in America) can bag you some incredible stories, like the woman who bought a game for a few dollars and got it appraised at $15,000

    Keep them eyes peeled :D

I like looking around for games, but generally speaking you are not going to find any quality PC games for a couple of quid, will keep looking though :)

Because most of them look crap by todays standards?

The PS4 will be out in a few months, 1 generation behind I can understand, but 2 generations?

I've been gaming since the 1980's but there are only a couple of titles from those days I will still play now.

Personally I just picked up a pile of PC games for a few quid each in the recent Steam sale and they're only a year or two old rather than 10. Best price was Tomb Raider Underworld for the grand price of 62p, although that was reputedly a pricing error and was later changed. Still if you don't keep an eye out for bargains you aren't going to find any!

Exactly, I sold my old PS2 last year with cards and controllers and other gubbins and best price I could get for it was £25, less after I paid P&P. If I saw a PS2 title on sale for more than 50p I'd feel it was way too much.

Sometimes I still play Amstrad CPC 464 games. Sometimes I still play PS2 and PS1 games. If my Sega console still worked I'd probably play them games from time to time as well. I don't care how games look, games aren't about the graphics they're about the gameplay. Some of the older games are far more fun than some of todays.

Why would you pay £400+ for a brand new console and a handful of games that will most likely have bugs they need to work out and updates to do when you could buy loads of full games with no updates or bugs and a PS2 console for £40?

There's far more older games that I still want to play and to me they sound better than the games to be released on the next gen.

PS2 prices have actually gone up over the last year. Shops are selling just the consoles for £30 each and often with games they go for at least £20 on ebay with postage on top.

Some games are worthless, even on this gen. Some games are worth a small fortune. The charity shops have no idea on prices though and it's rare they get any truly rare games in so often all you find is FIFA and Tiger Woods at £2 each.

For 50p there are still hundreds of PS2 games I'd buy if I found them, but FIFA is not one lol.

He answered that question in his first sentance.

I would have thought a PS2 game is as likely to have bugs, but can never be patched, "cannot be updated" is not a selling point. I don't remember encountering game breaking bugs on any console game I've played though.

Anyway, I've already played the PS2 games I wanted to play, I played them many times on the PS2. Maybe if someone gave me a PS2 and PS2 games I'd play them, but it's certainly not something I would spend money on.

If you mean he answered it by saying they look crap by todays standard then I don't think that answer justifies spending £400 over £40 because, as I said, it's the gameplay that counts.

Some PS2 games have glitches, although far more happen when you start adding cheats lol. However, the games are sold as complete and to the best quality possible. Not everyone has each glitch found and often they happen when you do odd things. Games now are thrown out half complete with bugs then they require patches and try and sell you DLC. Some games are unplayable to start with which is a waste of £30-£40.

I get fed up of updates and even after updating some games still have bugs or you find you have to wait ages for a console update and then a game update before you can play. Much as I like the PS3 and prefer it to the other consoles of this gen, I can't remember the last time I turned it on and could just play a game. I've never thought anything needed updating on my PS2. Games all run fine, I can play them right away and glitches are very rare.

The original point was why rush to buy this gen or next gen games when there are so many good PS2 games and it's true, there are many good ones. If you haven't already played the PS2 games and don't care to have top graphics and constant updates the PS2 is a great option and there are some cheap games for it.
