Unowed Debt?

I wonder if there is anyone out there that can offer me any advice on the following:-
I bought an ornament from one of these magazine advertisements. I paid for it and another one turned up, and another one - when I called them about it they said that it was a set and that they would carry on sending them until all six had been sent. I asked for them not to send me any more and they did stop but they asked me to pay for the other two that they had sent. I didn't want them and they requested that I return them - I did, by recorded delivery and I also followed it up with a telephone call to make sure they had received them, to which they had agreed they had. This was about 14, yes 14 years ago.
I received a letter from a debt agency a couple of years ago and I rang them to explain the situation - this is for a bill of £56 apparently - and they said they would go back to the company. I have received a further letter from them this morning - over two years to say that they are disappointed that I've not contacted them despite numerous communications (despite not receiving anything since the last letter two years ago) and that this bill was still unpaid - however, the company would be interested in me paying a reduced amount of the bill.
Surely if I owed this amount, they would want the full amount, and not offer me to reduce it, and why has it taken them twelve years after the initial purchase to contact me. I obviously have no postal proof of this after all that time, but as they were returned by recorded delivery and confirmed as being received by the original company, I am unsure as to why this has happened but I'm certainly not willing to pay for goods that I don't have.
Any advice would be appreciated.
